Publisher's summary

The companion volume to 12 Rules for Life offers further guidance on the perilous path of modern life.

In 12 Rules for Life, clinical psychologist and celebrated professor at Harvard and the University of Toronto Dr. Jordan B. Peterson helped millions impose order on the chaos of their lives. Now, in this bold sequel, Peterson delivers 12 more lifesaving principles for resisting the exhausting toll that our desire to order the world inevitably takes.

In a time when the human will increasingly imposes itself over every sphere of life - from our social structures to our emotional states - Peterson warns that too much security is dangerous. What’s more, he offers strategies for overcoming the cultural, scientific, and psychological forces causing us to tend toward tyranny, and teaches us how to rely instead on our instinct to find meaning and purpose, even - and especially - when we find ourselves powerless.

While chaos, in excess, threatens us with instability and anxiety, unchecked order can petrify us into submission. Beyond Order provides a call to balance these two fundamental principles of reality itself and guides us along the straight and narrow path that divides them.

Must Read!!!

This book has some hard lessons that coincide with Peterson's previous book, 12 Rules For Life. If you're one who buys into the media and woke culture hype about the man, this may actually be a book that would be good for you to read and make you ponder more about who the man behind this book is.

This book takes a rather unexpected pagan turn and paralells it with Christian doctrine, more so than 12 RFL, which is more focused on Christianity. This creates a unique and rather thought provoking message that a person such as I who does subscribe more to the pagan belief, and those of other faiths, can easily digest, incorporate, or find commonalities with those whose beliefs we differ from.

I found myself crying as some of the things hit hard for me as they were lessons I have learned, forgotten, or have never considered until now.

Best book of the past 20 years

I’m honestly amazed at how good and profound this book is. I read complex non fiction all the time, 80-100 books a year, 2-3 hours a day and whenever I read newer books it’s substance is okay. Beyond order, however, is both an easy read but also contains great examples on how to deal with life and become a better person. It even covers why you should want to be honest. This book is 10-30x better than the first one 12 rules on life. And the first one was pretty good actually. Definitely recommend reading this one for everyone except total dummies, and I recommend reading it more than once. I really hope JP will write more books because this is nothing less than truly remarkable.

Ridiculously relevant

The author makes note in his foreword of the two errors a writer must face when penning and publishing a book during an ongoing pandemic. He consciously determines to risk the error of failing to directly address the pandemic, remaining true to the plan set out for this book before the pandemic hit. It remains remarkable to me then that this work seems significantly more relevant than anything else I’ve experienced during this continually trouble time.

Even better than 12 Rules for Life

The book gets better as it goes. I did not like the first chapter as much as the later chapters.

My hero

Jordan has been my hero for many years now. His books and lectures have been an important part of the transformation from standard ignorant little boy to self aware, strong, capable, articulate human being. I know what it is that I want and why I want it. I can defend this and I stand for myself. Jordan has always been there along the way and I treasure the day that I gave him a hug in Amsterdam after one of his talks. I love him and I know he loves us and he has made me into something that will further goodness and love. thank you
