About this listen

They were the toughest, deadliest mercenaries in that part of the galaxy... and they'd been double-crossed!

Celadon, a poor nation on a poor planet, engaged in civil war and a haven for every type of villainy in space, is ripe for cleanup. The military could pacify it handily, but it would take a statesman to fix it. But statesmen have ethics, which politicians and megacorps find inconvenient. Celadon's President Bishwanath compounded the sin by being astute, ambitious and capable. Something had to be done, because a working nation isn't much use for pork and graft. When the word comes down to replace him, the politicians move on with a new plan, reallocating resources, and finding a more pliable president to put in place. There are three problems with this solution. Bishwanath does not want to be replaced. His mercenary bodyguards are more loyal than the politicians. And if they're not on contract - there are no rules.

Greatly enjoyed

A rich story packed into what felt like a three part series. Starts out strong and ends with a bang!

Love this story

I really like this story AS a book -- well written, well paced, and evenly spread between character headspaces for maximum effect of storytelling.

The narrator did a phenomenal job: I could tell you who each character was simply when Doersch began speaking their dialogue. Appropriate accents, ways of speaking, everything.

Least favorite? The fact that he apparently didn't narrate the REST of the series!!

Great story with even better narration

If you like the Freehold series this is going to be as much fun as you'd expect. What I found the best part was the narrator did his voice modulation for the different events and characters amazingly well, like when the characters were choking on dust it came out in their speech. Very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to hearing the other books in the series.

Interesting Series<br />

I like a series where every story is only loosely connected to the other stories.

The different perspectives are more enlightening than the same repetitive dialog store after story.

solid action story with fun characters and an some interesting insights into why "nation building" so often fails. that, and the importance of Jerry Springer.

Another good one

Very entertaining. The story keeps your attention. Interesting presentation of future technology. Undertones of sexism slightly evident, hopefully humankind will evolve a bit more than represented in that aspect. Enjoyed the ties with other characters and locations in the series.

Better to Beg Forgiveness

Only downloaded first chapter, played around and finally got rest of book that was yesterday. Today when I read a chapter in the ebook version and tried to sync with audio book it would not sync. Looked at audio book and only had first chapter again. It started over but already read and listen to that chapter. Tried to get rest of book, gave up after 15 minutes. Waste of money I read for fun not aggravation.
