About this listen

Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white.

While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king. War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular - a shade too popular for her employer's taste.

Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.

Continuation from "Last argument of kings"

Continuation from "Last argument of kings" with a little side step. At firs I was little lost what to read after "Last argument..." but after little Googling figured out this was the way to go.

Its a side step from the first law trilogy. But it deepens the lore and bring new characters to it.
Absolutely recommend.

Outstanding

Just wonderful. Though I have to read my Abercombies with some time between them for how depressing they can be, this is just superbly written with lovely character. The plot does get a little overly complicated at times, but that's the genre for you.

JA characters are perfectly portrayed by Steven P!

Joe Abercrombie is becoming one of my favourite fantasy authors. His depth of character and world creation are enthralling! I thought Glokter was my favourite bad-ass, but I now think I might really like Monza Murcatto more! Nice to see some of the familiar others appearing here too ... Cosca is always a favourite, and Im intrigued by Shylo Vitari too. And what is Shenk - there is a mystery I need to read on to solve!? A carpenter/cannibal/shape-shifter/time controller aka the matrix - awesome!

Steven Pacey narrates this story perfectly and he captures the accents of the North, Styria and all the different characters brilliantly. Love his rendition of Friendly ... gotta love Friendly.

Great Story, Even Better Narration and Performance ... 4.5 stars for me.

Great from start to finish

A great new cast of characters along with some familiar names. Things kick off right from the start and keep pace righ to the end. Great characters, well developed and in Abercrombies style often put to beffitting or undeserved ends.

Once again Steven Pacey puts in a flawless performance, every character unique and he hits every whispered, whimppered, croaked, shouted and stranggled line without fail.

Another excellent story from Joe Abercrombie

Steven Pacey is an outstanding narrator who gives life to Abercrombie's colourful characters. Its a dark tale of revenge with many excellent Abercombie twists. Things often don't go the way you might expect.

Favourite character the swashbuckling Koska who always sees the humorous side. Another well crafted, intriguing but despicable character is the Poisoner Morvia. All of the characters are flawed but it makes them all the more interesting.

I listened to the "First Law" prior to this and enjoyed it. "Best Served Cold" is also excellent.

great

consistent with first trilogy but with a focus on different characters, a few from the first books and a bunch of new ones.
the narration is some of the best I've ever heard, but if you've listened to the earlier books you already know that

Should have an adult only rating.

Do not listen to this when children can hear. The sex scenes are very graphically described.
