About this listen

Grendel prowled in, hating all men and all joy and hungry for human life. So swift was his attack that no man heard an outcry; but when the dawn came, 30 of Hothgar's best and noblest thanes were missing.

Only Beowulf, foremost among warriors, has the strength and courage to battle with Grendel the Night-stalker. In this thrilling re-telling of the Anglo-Saxon legend, Rosemary Sutcliff recounts Beowulf's most terrifying quests: against Grendel the man-wolf, against the hideous sea-hag and, most courageous of all - his fight to the death with the monstrous fire-drake.

A great way to get the story in simpler language

My only complaint is that this book is 2 hours long and yet would cost me $10 at least. I usually try to not use my credits on books less than the membership price but I made an exception not realizing how short it was.

Other than that, this book was excellent like all of Sutcliff's work. I remembered reading Eagle of the Ninth and Song for a Dark Queen in middle school and loving them, and I've had a fascination with the dawning of civilization in various places ever since, so as an adult and missing what was not only good writing but also great entertainment, I looked for her books. All of them are well done, well narrated too, but short for me. They seem awfully expensive for the length.

Excellent history on audio. After reading about Beowulf in homeschool history, we listened to this version while in the car. I'm so pleased we added this to our audio library.

Any additional comments?

I listened to this alongside an unabridged audio of the original; my 12-year-old daughter enjoyed it as well. Sutcliff's retelling is vigorous, engaging, and faithful to the original. The reader is very good and really brought the story to life.

THE LEGEND COMES ALIVE!

Wonderful adaptation of this legendary tale of literature by Rosemary Sutcliff. The text is intact and unabridged. The sound recording and the editing seemed top quality without any noticeable distractions to pull the reader away from the story. And Sean Barrett’s passionate narration breathed so much tangible LIFE into this classic tale! I felt like an invisible witness to the events as he described them. Highly Recommended for ALL fans of Legends, Myths and Folklore regardless of age. Excellent listen!
