About this listen

When is a curse not a curse? How does a house become a prison? Why is a reformed murderer the only hope for a far-too-easily injured boy?

Athelas has always been opposed to having a small possibly cursed Australian boy in the kitchen. When that small boy disappears, however, and Athelas's housekeeper Camellia strongly encourages him to do something about it, he finds himself wavering.

YeoWoo wants nothing to do with the disappearing Harrow, cursed or otherwise. Caught up with her own investigation and preparations for revenge, she would prefer her housemates to remain unseen and unheard. Entirely absent is even better.

But Athelas and YeoWoo have something in common: they both tread warily when it comes to their housekeeper, who runs the house with a tea-scented, magic-laced rod of iron. Camellia holds the key to Athelas's pretensions of reformation being accepted—and blames him for Harrow's disappearance. And she is determined to save Harrow, no matter what it takes.

Life as a reformed murderer would be so much easier if the process didn't include so much . . . reformation.

Engaging Story

This book is so engaging and the author does a fantastic job of storytelling! After all the events in the City Between series I was looking forward to getting the rest of Athelas’ journey toward redemption!

I'm trying

I'm trying so hard to like this narrator but it's like his solution for distinguishing each character is simply to drag out the words they're speaking. Also, why on Earth did he decide that Morgana's voice should sound like a 300lb, old man who smokes a pack a day?? I'm so confused! The story itself is all that's keeping me listening.

Personal Opinion of the accents

While this storyline is set in South Korea some of the characters, specifically those from Australia/ Tasmania seemed to be a Korean accent. Regardless of that I always LOVE the behind series stories!!

I can’t finish it.

I tried to keep listening. The story is so good, but the narrator makes it impossible to listen to. He’s grasped the main character, but destroyed all the others with the same botched Korean accent for several characters or a poor cockney impression for an Australian accent - again the same voice for each character. If it didn’t impact the author I’d return the book.

I love this series!

Ahhhhhh…. This series is so good! I love how characters from The City Between keep showing up. I also really love that this series is all about redemption. I have no idea how this story is going to end but I am loving the journey! I can’t wait for the next book to come out on Audible. ❤️

I would definitely recommend reading The City Between series first!

These books are violent and do deal with some pretty heavy topics (human trafficking and abuse), but there is zero language and while I’m hoping that a romance might be starting to blossom there is no spice.
