Alexandre Trudeau
About this listen
To this day, China remains an enigma. Ancient, complex, and fast moving, it defies easy understanding.
Ever since he was a boy, Alexandre Trudeau has been fascinated by this great country. Recounting his experiences in the China of recent years, Trudeau visits artists and migrant workers, townspeople and rural farmers. Often accompanied by a young Chinese journalist, Vivien, he explores realities caught in time between the China of our memories and the thrust of progress. The China he seeks out lurks in hints and shadows. It flickers dimly amidst all the glare and noise. The people he encounters along the way give up but small secrets yet each revelation comes as a surprise that jolts us from our preconceived ideas and forces us to challenge our most secure notions.
Barbarian Lost, Trudeau's first book, is an insightful and witty account of the dynamic changes going on right now in China, as well as a look back into the deeper history of this highly codified society. On the ground with the women and men who make China tick, Trudeau shines new light on the country as only a traveler with his storytelling abilities could.

Traveling alone, Erika Fatland is a true adventurer in every sense. In Sovietistan, she takes the listener on a compassionate and insightful journey to explore how their Soviet heritage has influenced these countries, with governments experimenting with both democracy and dictatorships.

Nearly 30 years later, Ted Simon took to the road again to retrace the epic journey he made in his 40s. Story
Bewitched by Indonesia for twenty-five years, Elizabeth Pisani recently traveled 26,000 miles around the archipelago in search of the links that bind this impossibly disparate nation. Fearless and funny, Pisani shares her deck space with pigs and cows, bunks down in a sulfurous volcano, and takes tea with a corpse. Along the way, she observes Big Men with child brides, debates corruption and cannibalism, and ponders "sticky" traditions that cannot be erased.

Eleven years later in Africa, she spotted a young boy wearing that very sweater, with her name still on the tag inside.

Story
Hong Kong is the world’s most exciting city, at once fascinating and exasperating, a tangle of contradictions. It is a dazzling amalgam of conspicuous consumption and primitive poverty, the most architecturally incongruous yet undeniably beautiful urban panorama of all. Through firsthand reportage, world-renowned travel writer Jan Morris takes us through the crowded streets of this enigmatic city, offering the most insightful and comprehensive study of Hong Kong thus far. She reviews Hong Kong’s early days as a British opium port controlled by pirates, cutthroats, and scoundrel tycoons, and looks ahead to the city’s future.

Just whiny and depressing
I love traveling to and reading about China so I was looking forward to adding another perspective. But this guy just seems to want to whine about little things and try to make everything into something more meaningful than it is. He gets all depressed and misses enjoying the adventure he is on. And he keeps trying to make it political and emotional but fails to really say anything actually significant. This sounds like it was written by a spoiled teenager who thinks he has a sage, world-weary perspective. Not enjoyable at all, and doesn’t paint a compelling picture of China. Not recommended.
