About this listen

Portsmouth, England,1760. Patricia Kelley, the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy Barbadian sugarcane planter, falls from her imagined place in the world when her absent father unexpectedly dies. Raised in a Wiltshire boarding school, 16-year-old Patricia embarks on a desperate crossing on a merchantman bound for Barbados, where she was born, in a brash attempt to claim an unlikely inheritance. Aboard a merchantman under contract with the British navy to deliver gunpowder to the West Indian forts, young Patricia finds herself pulled between two worlds - and two identities - as she charts her own course for survival in the war-torn 18th century.

Barbados Bound

Captivating! Felt like you were there...the history came alive for me. How it must have felt and been to be a woman in those times. Being a sailor, the authenticity of terminology was right on. Can’t wait to hear/read more!

Wonderful Adventure at Sea

Want a wonderful historical adventure this book is. There is so much detail I felt like I was living on a Tall Ship! I could feel the rock of the waves and it felt like I was on this adventure with Patricia. Set in 1760 I found the level of historical detail just amazing. So much happens in this book it’s a whirlwind for 17 year old Patricia who must adapt over and over as her situations changes. I love the water and felt like I’ve just lived the life of a sailor at sea. This book is just a gem and this is the first book I’ve listened to narrated by Ariana Fravel. I thought she did an excellent job! She really was perfect for this book

Strong female lead. Interesting story.

I'm so happy this is a series because I can't wait to find out what happens next to this brave, strong willed female lead. Her journey is interesting and her acquaintances varied. three of us this book is for anyone who enjoys a good adventure and a a woman who is willing to do what she must.
The narration was excellent and added to the story.

Swept away

I loved this book by Linda Collison. It can be hard to find a story that is both original and well told . This was both . The main character was so real with very real thoughts and emotions, and I grew to care very much about her and the other characters . The nautical and medical background of the author was quite apparent and you can tell she really did her homework. The story was gripping , the love stories were very tender, and I can't wait to start on Sugeon's Mate!
