Publisher's summary
Frisking is an interesting way to start a relationship. So is bonding over grief. Mix in an Italian mob, a hijacked ransom note, and two competing bakeries and you’ve got a war, a Bake War.
Former thief Bridge O’Niall needs to wipe her ledger clean. A new identity plus a fresh start are the perfect ingredients to create a guilt-free do-over.
FBI Agent Cowen Amaratti needs a change of profession, one where he doesn’t have to shoot anyone ever again. When the two meet, their lives are too incompatible, oil and water. But everything changes when they both move to the same tiny town to live their dreams as bakers.
Pilpil Bay, Oregon is hardly big enough to support one bakery, let alone two, so Bridge and Cowen duel in a bake-off. But competition isn’t healthy for a budding relationship, neither are ghosts from their past that endanger everyone. The only way to keep their friends and families safe is to do the things they’d vowed never to do again—steal and kill.

Story
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Ryder, Garrett, Kenzo, and Diesel - The Vipers. Their deals are as sordid as their business, and their reputation is enough to bring a grown man to his knees, forcing him to beg for mercy. They are not people you mess with, yet my dad did. The old man ran up a debt with them and then sold me to cover his losses. Yes, sold me. They own me now. I’m theirs in every sense of the word. But I’ve never been meek and compliant.

Excellent Narration in a Light Fun Romance with some Mystery
Excellent Narration in a Light Fun Romance with some Mystery
Perfect for Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen mysteries. A woman trying to be a better person gets involved with a fragile FBI agent, amongst baking challenges.
Narrator Christina Fountain does an excellent job with crafting a superior performance script and using well defined, believable, script appropriate male and female characterizations.
No graphic sex or offensive language. Family appropriate.
5 star!

An Enjoyable Experience
I'd never read or listened to anything by this author before but when the chance came to listen to this book, narrated by Christina Fountain whose work I like I thought I'd take a chance. The book did not disappoint "Bake Wars" is an enjoyable story about characters who are easy to relate to. The main characters are both to some degree broken which I feel makes the story more interesting.
I don't want to give the plot away but what I will say is the story flows well, is engaging and makes for compulsive listening once I started I didn't want to stop but that's the beauty of audio I could listen whilst doing other things. There's mystery, romance, and baking competitions in this fun story as Bridge and Cowen both try to live their dream of becoming bakers but as they bake off against each other they begin a friendship of sorts which slowly becomes much more.
The mix of a former thief and a former FBI agent is good but will it work long term? Will they combine their skills? As Bridge tries to take care of her family and their problems will she make a success of her new career? As for former Agent Cowen will he be able to cope with life in this small town?
I'm not saying what will say is download it and listen to the wonderful narration of Christina Fountain as she brings the story and the characters to life.

IMHO
I loved the story line and all the characters. My only issue that I found distracting was the narrator for the male parts. Sounded like someone with a bad sinus infection that was stopped up. Once I got used it I would randomly notice it. Other than that it’s a creative story line that was well written with unexpected twist.

So much fun, pure delight
I enjoy the author’s quirky style and sense of humor. The story-telling is engaging just like with her debut novel “the Lonely Mortician”.
