About this listen

In the 1950s and early 1960s, before television reigned preeminent, Kurt Vonnegut's short stories appeared frequently in popular magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and Argosy. Filled with unforgettable characters, humor, and satire, these stories offer a rare glimpse into a developing master of fiction. Vonnegut himself selected the very best of his early stories for this audio release, and he reads the preface and the afterword. Collection includes: "Thanasphere," "Souvenir," "Bagombo Snuff Box," "The Boy Who Hated Girls," "Lovers Anonymous," and eight other miniature masterpieces.©1999 Kurt Vonnegut (P)16 9; 1999 HighBridge Company Fiction Classics Comedy Short Story Witty Funny

Vonnegut, At His Peak

This is a typical (atypical for everyone else) Vonnegut story full of whimsy and wackiness, and human humor.

Alexander Marshall does a fine job narrating.

Vonnegut rediscovered

I've always liked Kurt Vonnegut. It's his weirdness that first appealed to me, and still does. I found this book of some of his earliest writing very refreshing. Although it's "normal" compared to his later stuff, it's creative, insightful and intriguing. Some of the themes are related to the time period in which they were written, but I found them all to be quite thought-provoking as well as entertaining.

Enjoyable short stories, audio chapter editing is messed up

Worth a listen if you’ve never heard these fun stories before. The main narrator is fairly good.

The chapters are all cut up incorrectly with multiple titles in single audio chapters, and the story titles aren’t included in the chapter names. Also whoever the narrator for the outro section is should not force themselves into any more audiobooks as it sounds slurred and hard to follow along, but that’s only the last 10-15 minutes.

Vonnegut could be average at times too.

Enjoyable most of the time. A few satiric gems of wisdom. Lacks the power and clout of Monkey House. Devotes a fair amount to complexities of matrimony and romance. Narration varies from engaging to listless. Would have preferred a title list and separate chapter for each story. But, to each his own I guess.
