Saul K. Padover ist ein Ethnologe der deutschen Katastrophe. Sein Bericht war einflussreich und ist noch heute lesenswert: Der amerikanische Präsident Eisenhower richtete sein Handeln unter anderem nach diesem frühen Plädoyer für eine zukunftsorientierte Deutschlandpolitik aus.
Als unbewaffneter Offizier der Abteilung für Psychologische Kriegsführung interviewte Saul K. Padover in den Jahren 1944/45 die deutsche Bevölkerung, um deren Stimmung und Lage zu verstehen, um zu wissen, was in den Köpfen der Besiegten vor sich ging. Ziel dieser Gespräche war, an wichtige politisch-militärische Informationen zu kommen.
Padover führte seine Interviews mit Vertretern aller Bevölkerungsschichten: Von der Bauerntochter bis zum Industriellen, vom Bischof bis zum Zwangsarbeiter, vom Nazibonzen bis zum kommunistischen Arbeiter kamen alle zu Wort. Die Auskünfte zeugen von Mut und kollektiver Depression, von Selbstmitleid und unbelehrbarer Arroganz und zeigen, dass die Deutschen noch keine Zeit gefunden hatten, sich komplizierte Ausreden zurechtzulegen - die Zeit der Verdrängung war noch nicht gekommen.
