تبدأ قصة الشقيقان فرانك وجو حيث يقومان بإنقاذ الدراج "كين بليك" من حادث قاتل، وبعد أن ساعداه على النهوض، يرون هذا الصبي يسلم ظرفاً إلى "فيكتور بيرتز" حيث أن هذا الاسم يعني شيئاً للأخوين لاحقاً. ويكتشف الأخوين تعرض صديق لهم يدعى "تشيت مورتون" للخداع بفاتورة قيمتها ٢٠ دولار مزيفة، وهو أمر أكدت الشرطة أنه أصبح شائع الحدوث في بلدة "باي بورت". وفي إحدى المرات يتم العثور على ملاحظة تهديد تقول "إسقاط القضية"، أو "خطر آخر لك ولعائلتك"، بعد سماع صوت ضجيج جعل جو يستيقظ ويتضح أنه صوت دراجة تتجه مبتعدة عن منزلهم، مما يجعل الشقيقان ليسا متأكديّن إذا كان هذا التهديد بسبب قضة التزوير التي يحققان بها أو قضية أخرى يحاول والدهم رجل المباحث حلها.
يقرر صديقهم "تشيت" التقدم لوظيفة في شركة تدعى "إليكتون" لتطوير الصواريخ ولكن حارس الشركة السيد "ماركل" يخبرهم عن عدم وجود وظائف شاغرة، ويلاحظون هناك وجود دراجة تشبه دراجة "كين بليك"، التي من المحتمل أن الشخص الذي ترك ملاحظة التهديد قد استخدمها، ويخبر السيد المدعو بـ "دوكر" أن "كين بليك" يقوم بأعمال غير دائمة للشركة ولكنه لم يكن موجوداً في ذلك الوقت، على الرغم من أن جو متأكد أنه قد رأى "كين" يراقب من نافذة طاحونة مجاورة لهم، ويعود الاخوين للتعرض لملاحظة تهديد قد رميت عليهم بسهم تقول "خطر، احذر يا هاردي".
تبدأ مغامرة الطاحونة حين يخبرهم صديق يدعى "توني بريتو" أن المكان الذي يعمل هو فيه صيفاً، يتلقى الأموال الزائفة التي تستخدم لدفع ثمن الأخشاب من قبل صبي مطابق لمواصفات "كين بليك". تبدأ عملية التحقيق للأخوين فينطلقان للعثور على عجلة بدء وإيقاف الطاحونة. ويتعرضان بعدها للهجوم ثم يعودان للتحقيق بعد أن يتعافيا. يحدث انفجار في شركة "اليكتون" ، ويرتعب الأخوين بسبب وجود والدهما في الداخل، الذي يخرج ناجياً من الإنفجار، موضحاً وجوده هناك لوقف الهجوم، بعد أن أصبح هناك هجمات على الشركات المماثلة في الولايات المتحدة. وتنتهي الرواية بإعتقال الشرطة للأشرار، و تقع قضية أخرى للأخوين ودعوتهما لحل لغزها.
