Canada Ends Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express Programs

  • Summary

  • In a recent decision aimed at ensuring fair access to study permits, Canada has officially ended the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) programs. These initiatives, introduced to expedite the visa process for international students, will no longer be available as of 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024.

The SDS, launched in 2018, provided faster processing for eligible students from several countries, while the NSE program offered a similar service for Nigerian applicants. Moving forward, all prospective students, including those from SDS and NSE countries, must apply through the standard study permit process, which also allows Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support.

Applications submitted before the cutoff time will still be processed under the SDS and NSE guidelines. The transition is part of Canada's commitment to enhance program integrity and ensure all international students have an equitable and supportive academic experience.
