  • With the July 4th weekend upon us, many New Yorkers and visitors will be heading to the waterfront to enjoy the fireworks and other festivities. With 520 miles of shoreline, Mayor Bloomberg would often refer to the waterfront as the sixth borough.

    Over the last 20 years, we've seen an incredible transformation along the waterfront. Governors Island is one of the best examples. Sitting smack in the middle of New York Harbor and just 800 years off the tip of Lower Manhattan, this 172 acre jewel has been re-energized with extraordinary open space. It's filled with arts, culture, and special events. And on this July 4th weekend, it's a place where you can get a greater appreciation of the history of our country.
