Herakles war ein Sohn des Zeus und der Alkmene, Alkmene eine Enkelin des Perseus; der Stiefvater des Herakles hieß Amphitryon, auch er war ein Enkel des Perseus und König von Tiryns, hatte jedoch diese Stadt verlassen, um in Theben zu wohnen. Hera, die Gemahlin des Zeus, hasste ihre Nebenbuhlerin Alkmene und gönnte ihr den Sohn nicht, von dessen Zukunft Zeus den Göttern selbst Großes verkündet hatte. Als daher Alkmene den Herakles geboren, glaubte sie ihn vor der Göttermutter in dem Palaste nicht sicher und setzte ihn an einem Platze aus, der noch in späten Zeiten das Heraklesfeld hieß. Hier wäre das Kind ohne Zweifel verschmachtet, wenn nicht ein wunderbarer Zufall seine Feindin Hera selbst, von Athene begleitet, des Weges geführt hätte. Athene betrachtete die schöne Gestalt des Kindes mit Verwunderung, erbarmte sich sein und bewog die Begleiterin, dem Kleinen ihre göttliche Brust zu reichen. Aber der Knabe sog viel kräftiger an der Brust, als sein Alter erwarten ließ; Hera empfand Schmerzen und warf das Kind unwillig zu Boden. Jetzt hob Athene dasselbe voll Mitleid wieder auf, trug es in die nahe Stadt und brachte es der Königin Alkmene als ein armes Findelkind, das sie aus Barmherzigkeit aufzuziehen bat. So war die leibliche Mutter, aus Angst vor der Stiefmutter, bereit gewesen, die Pflicht der natürlichen Liebe verleugnend, ihr Kind umkommen zu lassen; und die Stiefmutter, die von natürlichem Hasse gegen dasselbe erfüllt ist, muss, ohne es zu wissen, ihren Feind vom Tode erretten. Ja noch mehr: Herakles hatte nur ein paar Züge an Heras Brust getan, aber die wenigen Tropfen Göttermilch waren genügend, ihm Unsterblichkeit einzuflößen.
