Acerca de esta escucha

One thousand years after the Norse first settled in North America, they are heading back to try again. The choice to migrate away from Iceland is not their own. Their island has been an oasis of civilization in a world gone mad following The Long Night – when artificial intelligence failed and took down all computer controlled processes around the world, wiping out over 90% of humanity. Insulated by a cold but bountiful Atlantic Ocean, Iceland has maintained order in a world plunged into darkness. Now Iceland's volatile geology is the greatest threat her people face. The volcanoes responsible for her amazing beauty now threaten annihilation - a geological time bomb ready to wipe them out. With limited options, the Althing tasks the young warriors of the Icelandic Crisis Response Unit and Víkingasveit with finding a suitable new home somewhere along the devastated coast of North America. At first they encounter little organized resistance, mostly just hostile survivors of the abandoned mega cities. But something even more sinister lurks in the dark tangled forests slowly reclaiming the landscape. Something that hates humanity for what it did, for what it created, and for what it left behind. Is it genetic engineering gone mad or the Næturtröll of Norse mythology come to life that haunts the Íslendingar in the New Land? Political rivals and rising hostile empires sense an opportunity and prepare to take advantage. Just as they've always done, Icelanders band together for a New Land Taking and carve out a new life near one of the world's great harbors, a place once named for the Folk of the North. "Like a mashup of The Last Ship, Vikings and One Second After. Seriously, too interesting to be put into any one category."Author's Note:Like many others I became fascinated with Norse culture over the past several years. Instead of the stereotypes, I was more interested in how small bands of fearless explorers - most of them still unknown - had such an out sized influence on history. I'm likely related (distantly) to adventurers in the Sagas and yet the language, belief systems, and the lands they inhabited were as alien to me as if they sailed from Neptune instead of Norway. I plunged in and read whatever I could, absorbed every documentary and amazing podcasts like History of the Vikings, even tried to read the Sagas as written (limited success). My research is purely laymen, in no way am I a scholar. Please forgive any misinterpretation or misunderstanding of Icelandic history. This story is simply that; a story. The Saga of the New Land Taking is meant as a tribute to an Icelandic people with a fascinating past, an admirable present and an intriguing future. This is a novel written in the world of the Killswitch. In the not so distant future, an artificial intelligence system known as Grapevine takes over the electronic world. Then, at the behest of a group of shadowy elites, it pulls the plug on humanity. But instead of dying off, pockets of survivors learn to adapt and fill the gaps left by the huge urban centers that dominate today’s world. The Fortress Farm Series of books deals with these trials and tribulations in North America. The Saga of the New Land Taking takes place approximately 20 years after the initial Killswitch decimates humanity. Icelandic culture has adapted as well as any by leaning on their close knit society despite being plunged into what they call The Long Night.I hope you’ll enjoy getting to know the characters. Most are based on historical figures placed in fictional scenarios. Every chance possible I’ve introduced a bit of Icelandic phraseology, some mentions of traditional dress and food along with more recent customs. References to Norse mythology and Christianity are just that, references. The religious history of Iceland is as fascinating as the people who intertwined the faiths of their grandparents with their own. Enjoy!
