La ville de San Francisco est divisée physiquement par une fissure de fer, la Fente, matérialisée par le câble qui accroche les tramways à traction, séparant métaphoriquement la classe aisée au Nord et la classe ouvrière au Sud. Freddie Drummond, un professeur de sociologie rigide et conventionnel s'infiltre dans le quartier ouvrier pour écrire un livre sur les conditions de vie des travailleurs qu'il considère comme paresseux et sans ambitions. Cependant, Freddie se prend au jeu : s'il reste froid et réservé au Nord, il devient "Big" Bill Totts, un ouvrier syndicaliste populaire et séducteur au Sud. Mais cette double vie ne peut durer éternellement et il va devoir faire un choix.
