Publisher's summary

He performs his profane ceremony in a wooded Minneapolis park, anointing his victims, then setting the bodies ablaze. He has already claimed three lives, and he won't stop there. Only this time there is a witness. But she isn't talking.

Enter Kate Conlan, former FBI agent turned victim/witness advocate. Not even she can tell if the reluctant witness is a potential victim or something more troubling still. Her superiors are interested only because the latest victim may be the daughter of Peter Bondurant, an enigmatic billionaire. When Peter pulls strings, Special Agent John Quinn gets assigned to the case. But the FBI's ace profiler of serial killers is the last person Kate wants to work with, not with their troubled history. Now she faces the most difficult role of her career - and her life. For she's the only woman who has what it takes to stop the killer... and the one woman he wants next.

great story, but enough with the breathy falsetto

Decent reading in other respects, but a woman's voice can be conveyed without using a register higher than than used by most women, or excessive breathiness. This effect fails most spectacularly when it is used to convey the shouting of an assertive woman.

Overall very suspenseful, but a little gory

i really didn't need the details of burning bodies as much as was presented & the story certainly kept me guessing. I just hope there are not a lot of these kind of real serial killers running around.

Very enjoyable, but a little predictable.

The book was good, it was entertaining. My only complaint, is that it was a little predictable, as I find most murder/mysteries.

Wonderful

as I listened to this book, I thought that it was famIliar. I kept listening and thinking that it was something that I had heard before, seen before. Was it a movie? lt was so vivid that you just had to listen to it every moment that the book was on I was enthralled by it.

yes it did start off slow, which really surprised me. It was great full of surprises. Did not see the end coming at all.

Enjoyable but out of time

For a modern crime drama written in 2013, it is sorely out of place with the technology of the day. Tami Hoag makes use of pagers and answering machines extensively and does not talk about cellular phones until the last couple of chapters. This would have worked for the 1990s if the cell phones were only used by the wealthy but is completely out of place in 2013. Other than that I did enjoy the book. The narrator voiced it as some kind of Noir detective story. and to some extent I suppose it is. But I think a somewhat less gritty tone is more appropriate here. Overall it is good enough for me to continue the series.

The story was awesome.

The narration made me want to poke my ears out. Yikes. So hard to listen to.

Ashes to ashes

I enjoyed this book very much. Good story and kept me guessing.

I thought the narrator lost me when changing characters. The voices didn’t change enough that i knew who was speaking.
