About this listen

Sir John Waveney has inherited Waveney Hall. A veteran of the Great War himself, his inheritance has come because of the deaths in action of his two distant cousins, leaving him as the next male heir. He hopes to make the acquaintance of his two remaining cousins, Lady Jenifer Marr and Anne Belinda.

But Lady Marr proves very vague about her twin sister's whereabouts. Is she traveling with a friend or (as has been intimated) has she been incarcerated in a mental institution? No one seems to actually know, and several people seem bent on frustrating John's attempts to find her. Discovering that Anne Belinda missed her sister's wedding a year ago and was shortly after cut out of her dying father's will gives him even greater cause for concern. Where is she and what is she living on?

John's sense of responsibility drives him on and Patricia Wentworth's plot, as ever, is full of mystery, intrigue, and romance.

fFirst, the reading is excellent. I love Anne Hancock's performance. But why were Sir John's little songs cut out? Chapter 26 for example, the text leads into him singing about Caractacus Jones. in the audio the lead-in sentence is omitted as is the song. Why? I want the whole book!

Why cut any of it?

I always enjoy this author’s books because of the consistent elements found in a cozy mystery - the truth will always be discovered, wrongs will be put right, and the romantic couple is able to be together in the end. Though the Miss Silver books are the best, all of them are very good. I am so glad that Anne Hancock has recorded some of the non-Miss Silver books. She does an excellent job.

Another cozy mystery from Ms. Wenworth

This is another early 20th century Patricia Wentworth novel read very well by Anne Hancock. It's a mystery and a romance, and was great!

Warning: This isn't a Miss Silver novel.

More romance than mystery, but good

This is one of my favorite non-Miss Silver books by Patricia Wentworth, particularly the obstinate hero. The narrator does an excellent job.

Great narration of a terrific period piece

Read a review and thought I’d try this Wentworth book since I enjoy many of the Miss Silver mysteries. Waste of time- the plot is dumb, the characters implausible, could easily foretell the plot and the ending.….reminds me of a Nancy Drew or Trixie Belden plot.
Very sorry the five star review persuaded me to buy this audio book. The narrator was fine but that’s the only positive element of the audio book.

Disappointed
