About this listen

FBI agent Jessica Blackwood believes she's left her complicated life as a gifted magician behind her - until a killer with seemingly supernatural powers puts her talents to the ultimate test.

A hacker who identifies himself only as "Warlock" brings down the FBI's website and posts a code in its place that leads to a Michigan cemetery, where a dead girl is discovered rising from the ground - as if she tried to crawl out of her own grave.

Born into a dynasty of illusionists, Jessica Blackwood is destined to become its next star - until she turns her back on her troubled family to begin a new life in law enforcement. But FBI consultant Dr. Jeffrey Ailes' discovery of an old magic magazine will turn Jessica's world upside down. Faced with a crime that appears beyond explanation, Ailes has nothing to lose - and everything to gain - by taking a chance on an agent raised in a world devoted to achieving the seemingly impossible.

The body in the cemetery is only the first in the Warlock's series of dark miracles. Thrust into the media spotlight, with time ticking away until the next crime, can Jessica confront her past to stop a depraved killer? If she can't, she may become his next victim.

Loved every minute of it!

Fast paced crime drama with an incredible working knowledge of magic make this an enjoyable read.

A DIFFERENT TAKE

I liked the mix of mystery and illusion. I liked the beginning of the book, but the middle to the end lost its focus. The motivation of the prime character was not very clear and it seemed like the main purpose of the book was to lead you to the next book.

The ending left me hanging and unsatisfied.

The narrator was okay but sounded a bit melodramatic.

Very interesting listen, gripping.

I liked the idea, and the delivery was spot on. Narrator was not one of my faves but she did ok. I'd spend a credit on it.

I really liked the book

The story was interesting, and I hated to (metaphorically) put it down. My only issue is the long pauses between sentences. Even with that, I'm looking forward to the next book.

Interesting

The “magical” aspect of the storyline set it apart from the majority of police procedural novels.

with Mr Maybe always different and interesting

if you read or listen to many books you really desire something that's a little bit different, that's a little bit different off kilter, that's a little more intriguing and the author's books fit that category

Angel Killer

I enjoyed this story very much! It was somewhat predictable in certain parts but it didn't take away from it at all!

So Close

This was a really good story. Not as fabulous as The Naturalist series, imo, but very close. The main things that prevent me from giving it 5 stars are that nearly every chapter involved the heroine being "sick to her stomach" or "feeling like she was going to throw up" over stressful situations AND constantly claiming if anything bad happened or anyone else died it was all her fault when nothing was further from the truth. Why is it female protagonists written by men always seem to have this really overdeveloped sense of responsibility for anything that goes wrong?!
Still, WELL worth reading.
