Publisher's summary

Mort Crim has reported on major conflicts around the world for more than four decades and was a major inspiration for Will Ferrell’s performance in the movie Anchorman. Crim’s memoir takes listeners behind the camera to show what life was like when the local anchorman was as revered as the professional athlete and just as overpaid. It was a glamorous life, working alongside some of journalism’s legends: Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, Dan Rather, and Ted Koppel.

The son of an evangelical minister in a conservative church, Crim suffered his first crisis of faith at the age of 15. Despite nagging questions, Crim eventually followed his father’s path into ministry. But the more he delved into the Bible, the more his faith was shaken. Unable to defend from the pulpit things he wasn’t sure of, Crim left the ministry for a career in journalism, determined to pursue truth.

After a four-year stint in the Air Force, he earned his master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, and by the age of 30, had made it to New York - the epicenter of his profession. As a national correspondent for ABC, Crim anchored the network’s top-rated morning radio show and covered America’s newly developing manned space program. When Neil Armstrong took that first step on the moon, it was Crim’s voice that described the historic event for millions around the world.

At the urging of Walter Cronkite, Crim moved from network radio into the heady world of television news. At KYW in Philadelphia, Mort Crim was paired with the late Jessica Savitch, and their anchor team spawned the idea for Will Ferrell’s Anchorman movies. Crim’s journey for truth will resonate with anyone raised in a cocoon of certainty that they felt compelled to question.

Introspective Struggle That Defies Time

Mr. Crim's story is interesting and each chapter flows along easily leaving the reader wanting to know more without feeling like he skipped corners that would make him look "bad". His personal struggles with faith and staying true to personal values are well explained and a familiar struggle for many of us who were raised in strong religious homes. He gave me hope that one day I too will come to a place of peace in my own struggles with balancing logic and faith. In addition, as a Metro-Detroiter it was a treat to listen to his familiar and comforting voice once again!

Faith & Reality Collide

Mort was able to articulate the wrestling of his faith so thoughtfully and eloquently. As a fellow struggler of the conundrum of being honoring to a religious heritage and the journey of carving my own way, I found his writing to be honest and encouraging.

Candid, heartfelt and informative

A rare memoir that inspires and informs on news reporting before fake news epithets filled the airways. Mr. Crim describes as no other the maturation of childhood beliefs into adult rational thinking. I highly recommend this book to others.

Easiest 5-star in a while

This is more than just a book, or memoir read by an iconic voice, it will inspire you with a wealth of wisdom from a well-lived life full of adventure and adversity. Mort’s ascension through the ranks of broadcast journalism is merely the route he took that weaves you along a man’s journey soaring through every imaginable peak and valley of life’s trials and tribulations. The internal (and eternal) debates of faith, morals, and ethics against the reality of the world we all live in provide a sobering perspective that is beautifully interspersed with wit, charm, comedy, and tears. Bravo, Mort.

A little full of yourself…still

Still a bit full of yourself. You had some interesting parts but you could have left Out much of the philosophizing. And of course, you have a good intentions of being a journalist but your party has failed you. And you failed your party by not seeing the value of Trump. I’m an Independwnt.
