Publisher's summary

A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courts - even as she falls in love with a faerie prince - in this gorgeous debut novel.

Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel's paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron - Rook, the autumn prince - she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes - a weakness that could cost him his life.

Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunt's ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then love - and that love violates the fair folks' ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: For the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

loved the whole concept of this story but...

I absolutly loved the whole concept of this story, its just the kind of whimsical fairy tale I enjoy reading! However, parts of it will have you rolling your eyes, the love story was very rushed and not complelty believable to me, but other than that I really enjoyed the story, and the preformace was excellent. Well worth the time! I just wish it was longer.

Fun story, sappy love dialog

This was a great story clean and perfect for a YW audience. Then only drawback was the sappy declarations of love.

Meh

For a book thats main character says she doesn’t believe in such nonsense as “happily ever after”, that is what you get! Sometimes you need that kind of read, sometimes you go looking for that kind of read and hope there is more substance than just, “here’s boy, here’s girl, they like each other now because vicinity.” Author does great with descriptive words, secondary characters have wonderful personalities—but the two main characters lacked needed depth. The beginning is what got me and then when the story took off I was not biting.

Good Premise... Confusing Romance

Pros: Loved the relationship between humans/fae . This book really creates a convincing reason for why fae love/hate humans. And explores the price of life and immortality beautifully. These themes are wonderful and well explored!!

Cons: the Love interest is... confusing. It basically spends half the book giving examples for why he can’t or should or doesn’t understand love... but he’s also deeply in love with her. Even more than she loves him... but she also loves him too? Honestly, it’s all really confusing. He just feels like a hot vehicle to make excuses for her to explore the themes of the book.

Final: I would still recommend it, especially to people who enjoyed Wintersong

beautiful light airy fantasy

This was my first return to fiction in a long time. It was a delightful escape. The characters were charming and sweet. The imagery was stunning and wonderful to contemplate. I hope I get to see it on the big screen some day.

Fun listen, without a doubt.

ok, here's a review from a guy point of view...
fun, engaging to a degree...but all in all..a girl story. I was engaged and yes, it was time well spent...but it wasn't a guy story.
Plus...I had to divorce my own view of who the fair folk are to fall into this story.
That aside... fun story, good character development, engaging plot.
Exceptionally well narrated.

A Creative Fairy World

Every time I read a fairy tale I assume to know what to expect, but Margaret Rogerson's world of the fair folk surprised me with beasts reanimated from decay and death, the importance of vanity to the fair folk and their law of survival of the fittest. She also developed the very endearing characters of Rook and Isobel - an autumn prince and a portrait artist who lives and breathes her craft.

Unlike most humans in Whimsy, she doesn't want to drink from the well and become immortal. The price was too high because fairies cannot craft.

Rook falls in love with her and when she returns his feelings, they break the good law that forbids fair folk and human from falling in love. The punishment for their crime is death unless she drinks from the well and becomes a fair folk herself.

Isobel's quest to keep her humanity and love her autumn prince at the same time was admirable. She didn't compromise, she found a way to do both. And I thoroughly love how she accomplished the feat.

I would recommend these to readers who love fairy tales and love stories.
