About this listen

When you gamble at love...

When Hugh Deveraux discovers his newly inherited earldom is bankrupt, he sets about rebuilding the family fortune - in the gaming hells of London. But the most daring wager he takes isn’t at cards. A wealthy tradesman makes a tantalizing offer: marry the man’s spinster daughter and Hugh’s debts will be paid and his fortune made. The only catch is that she must never know about their agreement....

You risk losing your heart...

Heiress Eliza Cross has given up hope of marriage until she meets the impossibly handsome Earl of Hastings, her father’s new business partner. The earl is everything a gentleman should be, and is boldly attentive to her. It doesn’t take long for Eliza to lose her heart and marry him.

But when Eliza discovers that there is more to the man she loves - and to her marriage - her trust is shattered. And it will take all of Hugh’s power to prove that now his words of love are real....

An interesting and lovely story

I loved this book. Intertwining? Yes but something to get lost in. Can’t wait to hear another story by this author.

Charming and thoughtful

The narrator's voice made listening easy and enjoyable. The storyline was interesting and believable from the beginning. The Earl was made sympathetic and loyal to his family even when they were most unlovable and I refer to his mother and his sisters. Regardless of the many romance books that I have enjoyed, I am still jolted by the English class system. A system that values class ranking over basic kindness. A system that makes everyone a prisoner in one form or another and making movement almost impossible. The story is warming to the soul and to know that in the end , love conquers all rogues. You will enjoy the read and feel that your time was well spent. I might also add, you can become motivated to continue the series and that to, is an indication of how well the storyline captives the reader's imagination. l.H.H

Very very entertaining

C Linden is one of the best at creating magnetic stories. Like the first book in this series, I was caught in the very beginning and remained enthralled throughout the whole book. Never once, did I look to see how many more chapters were left. The characters, while strong and independent, were so well developed that I couldn't wait to see what happened next. C Linden definitely knows how to tell story and Beverly A Crick narrated this story very very well.
