About this listen

Hugo Award winner Harry Turtledove is the master of alternate history. In American Front he envisions World War I as it may have been if fought on American soil. The United States and Germany clash with the Confederacy, France, and Britain as the machines of modern warfare litter the landscape with carnage. Meanwhile, oppressed southern blacks head toward a fateful confrontation.

Great

Great book and my favorite reader to boot. If you don't like conjectural thought though give this one a miss.

What a world, an alternate world

The world building in this book is amazing alone but the events that take in this story is fascinating to read. People who are interested may enjoy it. Those who really enjoy history are gonna have a fun time reading it

Turtledove does it again, Guidall as well.

Would you listen to American Front again? Why?

I would. It's an impressive book.

What other book might you compare American Front to and why?

It's just as good as How Few Remain, and also better in some ways.

Which scene was your favorite?

The introduction to Jake Featherston.

Who was the most memorable character of American Front and why?

Featherston. We get some background on him. Custer too, but to me, he was annoying.

Any additional comments?

A must-have for any alternate history or Harry Turtledove fan.

Dowling!!!

I wish the story focused a little more on the interesting chracters and not the filler ones but still a good story over and will definitely be buying th he next one. I wish this book had more of the Red revolution in it.

Slightly Disappointing

I wish we would have heard more from the point of view of Generals. The closest we get is an aide to Custer, who is the same buffoon he was in How Few Remain.

I also wish we knew more about what was going on in Europe. We know more about Argentina and Chile than we do about Italy, for example.

Excellent Sequel

Enjoyed this immensely, very few boring chapters at all. Really excited to read the rest of the series.

The ending is straight up thrilling.

Amazing story and narration

This is peak Turtledove. All the different characters and all the slight differences in history like Frank Ferdinand being blown up and not shot. But George Guidell really sells this book and all the rest in this series he narrates (unfortunately he doesn’t narrate the setting accounts). All characters having different voices and having different feels in the the voice depending upon the situation of the character, unlike most narrators just read the book out but this is on a whole other level.

Average Turtledove

Mostly paint by numbers WWI alt-history. A few too many subplots. Predictable but worth a read.

Amazing story and narrator

Wow! I can’t believe I read any of Turtledoves books. Incredible storyteller. I just finished the first book in this series and am hooked! It’s been a while since I listened to anything this well written. I now intend to read everything this man has ever written.
