Acerca de esta escucha
Peter hated him…
…and the murder was brutal.
Could he really be the killer?
Peter served his country in Afghanistan. The brain injury was severe. To survive in the hospital, he kept his focus on the one thing that mattered, Mary. What he found back home, broke him.
Mary was with Billy, the bully who terrorized his childhood.
When the police arrested him for Billy’s murder, they had just one problem...
Peter claimed he couldn’t remember what he did that night.
Detective Luca’s career can’t afford another mistake. This case could be a problem, though, as the obvious suspect doesn’t remember a thing. Is Peter trying to pull a fast one?
Who else could have done it?
There’s more at play than meets the eye. Politics and personal demons plague him. Luca’s career and maybe his life are on the line.
You’ll love this riveting book one in the Luca Mystery police procedural series because of the unexpected plot twists.
Get it now.

Ariel Price wakes up in Lisbon, alone. Her husband is gone—no warning, no note, not answering his phone. Something is wrong. She starts with hotel security, then the police, then the American embassy, at each confronting questions she can’t fully answer: What exactly is John doing in Lisbon? Why would he drag her along on his business trip? Who would want to harm him? And why does Ariel know so little about her new—much younger—husband?

Good
A plot that has you saying what if, did it really happen. He has suffered since being in Afghanistan with memory lost. He hated the guy, but murder.
Who will fight and believe in him to fight to figure out the truth.
An interesting twist and how it was figured out, the narration was good and added to this mystery. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

A very good thriller
An absorbing story, impeccably narrated, that held my attention and got me questioning everything and everyone while the story advanced.
The main concept was very well developed, and the portrait of how politics and extraneous interests have an undue influence in how cases are worked and how the accused are... managed? It's an unsettling but very realistic view of the law.
I liked Detective Luca a lot, and the small insight we had into his family's life were interesting and help to understand him a little bit more. And I love him for his stubborn determination to find the truth and for not setting for the easy answer. But I'm still not really sure I'm on-board with the way in which he dealt with the suspect. Talk about shades of grey! *laughs*
I really enjoyed Francis G. Kearney's narration, too.

Not as advertised
I received a free review copy of this audio book, at my request, and am voluntarily leaving this unbiased review.
I was excited to get started on this book, the prospect of a mystery in a mystery really had my interest peaked. Unfortunately, it didn't really pan out that way.
The story starts out with the main character receiving a head injury, causing his focus and memory to be drastically affected.
Once we lead from his injury to the murder, we then switch to the detectives POV and progress to the murder investigation.
There isn't a dual mystery, it's simply a who did it. It's also a "who did it" that was fairly simple and straight forward. It's also not that hard to get a handle on whether the main character has done it or not. I was hoping for a deep mystery with twists and turns and something that would really leave me wondering. This was not to be the case.
The characters are likeable, but 1 dimensional. No real depth is added to their background and no attempt is made to flesh them out. They are who they are and that's it.
The setting is, similarly, not much to comment on. It's a run down town in the US. Over worked police, crime, etc.
The story really fails in 2 ways. First we have the predictably of everything. The story follows the path of so many others before it, that it looses its mystique.
Second, it doesn't realize the mystery it says its supposed to be addressing. The title is "Am I The Killer" and the description suggests that the main character is trying to figure out if he did it or not. However, this is not the case. The main character has memory and focus issues, meaning other than the odd "I wonder if I could have done it", Pete really doesn't focus too much on the murder at all. He only has a passing interest in the mystery and is definitely not an active participant in the investigation, or the story at all.
There is also an issue with the unsatisfying ending, but I don't really want to go into that, because of spoilers.
The narration, by Francis G Kearney, is jarring. He has a way of shouting the whole story. No real differentiation between characters, no real tender moments, no joking, just shouting all the time, with a weird inflection on the end of sentences. It's the second book by this narrator I've heard and it definitely seems to be his style. It's not horrible, but I don't think it's for me.
Like I said though, the characters are likeable, the story is interesting enough. It's not a bad story, just definitely not the story that was advertised. The narrator takes some getting used to, and the ending is unsatisfying.
I won't be continuing this series.

Well-written who-done-it with a twist
This story is about an Afghanistan vet who suffers a personality-altering head injury. The writer perfectly lays out the angry outbursts, memory lapses, and thought patterns of someone whose brain and body have been damaged.
Peter is a likeable guy, and the reader, the Detective Luca, Peter, and his brother Vinnie, all go back and forth about whether or not he killed a man who he has bad history with.
The writer also does a great job describing why and how prosecutors can railroad people into accepting plea agreements just so they can clear their desk and look good to the public. I've seen it happen personally.
Well written, relevant subject matter. The main characters are likeable and relatable. I'm going to find more books by this author because I'm betting there's a series revolving around Detective Luca.
The only negative is the narrator. He isn't connected to the story, and reads as if he's only reading to dudes without emotion. Everything is sort of shouted and women are made to sound naggy and whiney. His style is grating. I did get used to it after a while, but he's someone I'd avoid listening to in the future unless he improves his styles, makes it more natural, develops a connection to the story, and takes into consideration his audience is also made up of women.

It needs some work.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
First off, it is a good book. The story is interesting and captures your attention. The characters are distinct and important.
I had trouble following the sequence of the story. There was a lot of jumping around between time periods and characters. I think this could be easily remedied by labeling the character and the time. Example: Peter, after arrest, etc. this was only done a few times, then it got a bit confusing.
I would like more history for the detectives in this book. Since this is a trilogy, I hope to find out more in the next book.
Overall, I am pleased. A little tweaking here and there and I think it would be a great book. 🙂

Twists and turns!
Suspenseful! He did it, he didn't do it, no he really did it, no somebody else did it or did they?
What a roller coaster ride!
