About this listen

The saga of the Logan family - made famous in the Newbery Medal-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry - concludes in a long-awaited and deeply fulfilling story.

In her 10th book, Mildred Taylor completes her sweeping saga about the Logan family of Mississippi, which is also the story of the civil rights movement in America of the 20th century.

Cassie Logan, first met in Song of the Trees and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, is a young woman now, searching for her place in the world, a journey that takes her from Toledo to California, to law school in Boston, and, ultimately, in the '60s, home to Mississippi to participate in voter registration. She is witness to the now-historic events of the century: the Great Migration north, the rise of the civil rights movement, preceded and precipitated by the racist society of America, and the often violent confrontations that brought about change.

Rich, compelling storytelling is Ms. Taylor's hallmark, and she fulfills expectations as she brings to a close the stirring family story that has absorbed her for over 40 years. It is a story she was born to tell.

Critic reviews

"Taylor is unsparing in her depiction of the years of segregation and of the Black experience of white racism, bigotry, and injustice ... this never-didactic book is irresistibly readable, while the richly realized, highly empathic characters are unforgettable. Taylor's remarkable novel is, in sum, that rare exception: an absolutely indespensible book." (Booklist)

"This story also gives readers an up-close and personal view of key events of the civil rights movement. In this Logan swan song, Taylor is at her best. Surely the crown jewel of the Logan family Saga." (Kirkus)

Loved it! I had to listen until I reached the end hours and hours of listening. Another Fantastic book by Mildred.

Beat book ever

Ends very abruptly, that’s biggest negative. Definitely not for younger readers, as with Roll of Thunder

Abrupt Ending

Everything was phenomenal. How every book can be accounted upon and used to gain a deeper connection to Taylor’s final book is amazing. You feel tear up.

The ending was so gut wrenching.

I'm sad to see the Logan's story conclude , but it was definitely worth the read. If you love the Logan Family Saga, then you have to read this book.

Great conclusion!

I have enjoyed all of the Logan's stories and this was a wonderful way to wrap up the saga.

Great Ending

I started reading Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry in sixth grade and although that was the only book that we read in class, I took it upon myself to read the next two books and the few novellas Mildred D. Taylor authored. These characters that I’ve become so emotionally invested in have become like family to me and I’ve always wondered how their story had ended. I didn’t know this book expiated until two days ago and since then I’ve been binge listening to it and crying along with all the highs and lows, getting anxious at all the risky moments and above all, enjoying hearing their story. Thank you so much Mildred D. Taylor for giving us a finale that was well worth the wait!

Amazing end to an amazing series

Author seemed to rush the ending too much she should’ve had either Cassie marry Guy to help mend segregation or get back with Moe
She leaves Cassie alone and then ends the book 👎

Awesome book but ending was to rushed

Loved the story from beginning to the end. I wish there was another story after this one. Also wish the would make movie of the whole Mildred Taylor collection, like they did the Color Purple.

Awesome book!

Thank you to both the author and the narrator, they made this story come alive and made me aware of the injustice found in our country and the importance of the Civil Rights Movement.
