Publisher's summary

She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

Alice is Awesome!!

Any additional comments?

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4
I am ashamed to admit that I have been eyeing this series since it came out in 2012 and I am just now getting to read (listening to) it. Please don’t ask my way I waited to so long. All I got is that I get to read (listen to) all four books in a row (see there was a method behind my madness).
Where to begin? Where to begin? Alice Bell has always thought that her dad was just crazy. Seeing monsters in the dark. Being afraid of the dark. And teaching Alice how to fight. But what Alice didn’t know was that her life was forever going to change and she is about to learn that everything her father saw and believed is true.
I don’t want to give you more then that. You need to discover the truth for yourself. I loved Alice. She is feisty, determined, loyal and about to change the world. I can’t wait to see what happens next to her. Cole Holland. How to tell you about Cole. Think one bada$$, zombie-killing, dark, serious, determine and totally and utterly in love with Alice. So Cole is pretty much awesome!!!!! I am a little scared to see what Ms. Showalter makes Alice and Cole go through, but I trust it will all work out.
Let’s talk Kat. No not a meow, meow kitty. Kat, Alice’s new best friend. I want a Kat that will follow me around and tell me how awesome she is and how lucky I am to have her as a friend. Kat is just awesome. She lended so much comic relief to this story. Oh and her love story with Frosty is sweet and firey!!!!!
I really can’t wait to get started on book to Through the Zombie Glass!!!!
Ms. Gold does a really nice job bring Ms. Showalter’s words to life. I enjoyed listening to her tell me this story. My only issue is that there was not enough differentially between the male voices and the female voices.

Sooo good

I was a little hesitant to start listening to this book but dang am I happy that I did. I love the whole dynamic and absolutely everything about this book. It is very different from any other zombie story I have ever heard of. It’s a touch magical with lots of creepy moments as well as romantic ones. I love the slow burn romance and can’t wait to listen to more of it! Also I have never loved a character more than I love the best friend Kat and younger sister Emma.

Great Story, Meh Narration

I thoroughly enjoyed this book however the performance of the narrator was mediocre. I felt like she wasn’t connected to story and basked it in a monotone light. On the plus side, The narrator gave great character distinction.

thought it was standalone thankfully it's a series

Alice is badass and the story is really good. I wasn't expecting a romance but they do a good job of incorporating the juicy bits while not taking away from her character's strength.

Fun Easy Read but not what I was expecting

I enjoyed this book. The start of the book took some time to get going and I felt there were parts of the book that were boring though, but overall I can say that it was a good book. The book was entertaining and unique. It was a fresh new take on the zombie genre, but one that is more likely to appeal to fans of paranormal romance than a typical horror reader.

I liked most of the vibrant and interesting characters in this book. I;m looking forward to see how Ali and Cole's relationship evolves. My favorite character in the book was Kat the Best Friend. her character was well written.

I'm looking forward to the next 2nd book.

I liked the Narrator, Natalie Gold. I thought she did a great job on the voices for the characters.

Book was great! Narrator not so much

I'm not usually a YA reader. I generally feel like this section of books are just too damn angsty for me. But this book was different. Yes, it had a lot of the high school drama that you would expect from a YA novel but it also took a different spin than the title suggests. I wasn't sure what to expect coming into this book. I thought it would be a new Alice in Wonderland story but I'm glad it isn't. Even though the main character is indeed Alice and her world has been turned upside down there is no doubt about the fact that they are not in Wonderland. The zombies in this book were really interesting as well. I'm a fan of zombie movies and TV shows so for these zombies to be spirit based rather than physical and for only a select few being able to see that that is something we just don't see. It piqued my interest enough to continue the series.

Although, I will not be continuing to listen to the audiobooks. There is a reason why women should not do males that are over the age of 13. The reason is that the majority of females cannot make their voice low enough to sound like a man. I had troubles listening to this book because there were parts that I just simply couldn't tell who was talking. That is not what I like in my audiobooks. I always give a female narrator the benefit of the doubt for the first book and if I hate it then I just don't listen to the next one. That was the case for this book.

Loved It!!!!

I absolutely loved this book. If you love twisted fairytales, you should check this out. There were a few glitches, but once I rewinded and replayed it, I heard everything fine. Looking forward to listening to the next book.

Hard to finish

Long time Gena Showalter fan here. Her books are usually very entertaining and witty. This one was tough to get through. Long, drawn out with very little substance. Ms. Showalter's imagination is among the best, but I think stale might be a good description for this story. I did like how she handled a certain sensitive part between the two main characters towards the end, but other than that, I'm a tad disappointed.

Full of action and great chemistry!

And I should add no love triangle!!! Wish there was more intimacy but maybe the 2nd book will have it.
