About this listen

When Alexander wakes up with gum in his hair, he thinks that maybe it’s going to be a bad day. When he trips on the skateboard by his bed and drops his sweater in the sink, he knows it’s going to be even worse than he thought. His brothers find fabulous prizes in their cereal boxes; he finds cereal. His best friends get fancy desserts in their lunch boxes; Mom forgets dessert. From being scrunched in the car on the way to school all the way to lima beans for supper and kissing on TV (yuck!), the day just keeps getting worse. It’s enough to make him want to move to Australia. A popular and prolific author of children’s books, Judith Viorst writes so that kids can recognize themselves in her stories. Johnny Heller’s sympathetic narration lets the child in everybody identify with Alexander’s predicament and his temptation to go somewhere far away.

There are days like these in Australia, too!

Absolutely love this book and Alexander’s dilemmas as he goes from one unfortunate experience to another!

Ages so beautifully!

We enjoyed this book when my brothers and I were kids. Then with my kids it was just as loved. Now, my granddaughter has been introduced to Alexander and his relatable, funny world. A new generation of fan! Anyone who's ever had a Monday should give this a listen, and enjoy the laugh! Then pass it on.

I always loved reading this to my kids!

The book is a wonderful way of showing from a child’s point of view that not every day is going to be sunshine and roses, and it’s OK to have a bad day every once in a while.

A great book for emotional preschoolers

But way over priced for a 10 minute reading. The narration is ok, not particularly amazing.

Poor Alexander!

And the song for today is Bad Day by Daniel Powter.

Or Alvin and the Chipmunks, depending on your preference.

I was browsing through some children's books to listen to, and upon coming across this one, I figured it is quite fitting with the news we received in the office. Anyway, I must say this is an interesting way of looking at a horrible, no good, very bad day from the child's perspective. But, like with all children's books, the ending has a very poignant and reflective lesson and it is most real as it gets and I think it will stay with me for a long time.

This book is a reminder that even if having a bad day is unavoidable, this too shall also pass.
