About this listen

Alex was Ian's five-year-old son: brilliant, earnest, and compassionate. He is dead now, but Ian can't let him go. When his wife urges him to move on, he drives her away. His performance at work collapses; his friends leave him. Six months later, alone in an empty house, Ian starts to see his son again.

Every vision is a repeat of something the boy said or did in life: aching memories replaying themselves for Ian's eyes alone. Are these images of Alex real? Has Ian's son found a way back, to forgive or condemn his father? Or has Ian's sorrow metastasized into psychosis?

With a masterful hand, best-selling Kindle Horror author Adam J. Nicolai paints a picture of grief, madness, and the furious strength of a father's love for his son.

Editorial reviews

Ian is having difficulty letting go of the murder of his 5-year-old son, Alex. As a result, his marriage crumbles, his performance at work suffers, and his friends all abandon him. Ian eventually finds himself alone - and then the hauntings start. Five-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner Mark Vietor expresses an entire range of emotions and tones flawlessly, using actual shifts in personality rather than vocal tricks for each character. Listeners will wonder whether Ian's visions of his son are a sign of psychosis or whether Alex is trying to contact him from the grave.

This isn't really a horror story but really a story about grief. Slow start but picks up pretty well.

Not really Horror

I listen to this book throughout my 24 Hour Rd. trip and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole six hours I absolutely loved it. It was very well written, it rips your heart out makes you cry but also makes you appreciate your love ones so much more. I would highly recommend reading this book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This audio book was broken up in two sections. The entire first section was not needed.

If you’ve listened to books by Adam J. Nicolai before, how does this one compare?

N/A

What about Marc Vietor’s performance did you like?

It was OK

Do you think Alex needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Heck no! I couldnt take another follow up to this! Took too long to get going, and then when it finally DID get going, it seemed like it was a rushed ending bursting full of information!

Took a billion years to get going

kept me interested, although ian pissed me off more than a few times. some of the details can be heart breaking to know that these things actually occur to children.

suspenseful

Great story. Intelligent, concise prose. Well worth the time, money and emotional investment. Highly recommend!

Excellent!!

The story begins slowly and rambles on for several empty chapters. And then when you wake up the book slows down even more, but if you can hang in there until you get to the final 5 or 6 chapters there is some moderately slow action. It took me two months to finish this book.

Slow

I assumed I was getting into a regular ghost story, one that may be sad, but I was pleasantly surprised. I found myself working just as hard to pull together the mystery as Ian and just as heartbroken at every mention of his son. If you're looking for a scare, this isn't the book, but a mystery? And good story? One about a caring father and a wonderful little boy? This is it.

A mystery that grips you

I loved this book, but couldn’t understand why the ‘n’ word has to be used? There was no need. Was there a particular reason for it?

Loved it but...
