Aladin, einziges Kind eines mittellosen Schneiders, hat nichts als Flausen im Kopf. Als der Vater erfährt, dass Aladin partout nicht in dessen Fußstapfen treten möchte, versinkt er so sehr in Gram, dass er stirbt. Von nun muss die Mutter allein für den Unterhalt sorgen, während sich ihr Sohn weiterhin als Taugenichts in der Stadt herumtreibt.
Eines Tages läuft er einem maurischen Magier über den Weg, der behauptet, sein tot geglaubter Onkel zu sein. Er verspricht der Mutter, aus dem Jungen einen ehrenwerten Kaufmann zu machen, kleidet ihn neu ein und bittet im Gegenzug um Gehorsam.
Bei einem gemeinsamen Spaziergang bringt er seinen vermeintlichen Neffen dazu, in eine Höhle zu klettern, in der ein Schatz verborgen liegt - eine kostbare Öllampe. Als der Onkel glaubt, Aladin wolle ihn um den Schatz betrügen, sperrt er ihn in der Höhle ein und verschwindet. Gefangen im Dunkeln entdeckt Aladin, was es mit dem Schatz auf sich hat. Die Wunderlampe beherbergt einen Geist, der Wünsche erfüllt.
Mithilfe des Dschinns entwickelt sich der Tunichtgut zu einem geschickten Händler, der sogar die Sultanstochter erobert. Bis dahin muss Aladin allerdings einige Abenteuer bestehen. Schließlich gibt es da ja noch den argwöhnischen Magier, der die Wunderlampe für sich haben will.
