Anne Brontë
About this listen
Too often, Anne Bronte has been portrayed as a saintly, self-effacing shadow of her elder sisters. But clearly she possessed resources of courage and determination equal to theirs, together with a sweetness that was all her own.

Story
Set in a chaotic time in England, during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, Caroline Helstone's world is turned upside down when she meets the vivacious Shirley Keeldar. Shirley becomes a beacon of light for Caroline as the two become close friends. However, Caroline is soon shocked to discover that Shirley has won the affections of Robert Moore, the impoverished mill owner whom she loves. Fully representative of Yorkshire life at the time, Brontë's second novel is completely gripping, unrelenting and utterly wrenching in its portrayal.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Story
The Mill on the Floss is one of the great works of English literature. It is perhaps the most autobiographical of all Eliot's novels. The relationship between its heroine, Maggie Tulliver, and her brother, Tom, closely resembles that of George Eliot and her own brother, Isaac. The subject of sibling affection was clearly a deeply poignant one for George Eliot - she also wrote a series of beautiful and evocative sonnets entitled 'Brother and Sister'.

Lady Ludlow's appalling snobbery, prejudice and bred-in-the-bone conviction as to the superiority of the English aristocracy and their feudal way of life are deliciously tested, and found wanting, in this gently radical tale of the collapse of a social system. Elizabeth Gaskell's My Lady Ludlow is a brilliant picture of the shift in power in a rural northern village, from the velvety feudal Ludlows to the glitter of the new money rattling through the system courtesy of the brazen baker from Birmingham.

Story
Self-made American millionaire Christopher Newman arrives in Paris brimming with hope and optimism, excited to experience the culture and, hopefully, find the perfect woman to become his wife. After a chance encounter with American expatriate friends, his attention is drawn to Madame de Cintré, 25-year-old widowed daughter of the late Marquis de Bellegarde. Having fallen on hard times, the centuries-old aristocratic family permits Newman's courtship to proceed; however, they later persuade the widow to break off her engagement to the nouveau-riche businessman.

Story
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping.

Story
Dombey and Son is vintage Dickens and explores the classic themes of betrayal, cruelty and deceit. Dombey's dysfunctional relationships are painted against a backdrop of social unrest in industrialized London, which is populated by a host of fascinating and memorable secondary characters. The complete and unabridged novel is brought spectacularly to life by veteran reader David Timson.

Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion and a life-long committed Darwinist, abridges and reads this special audio version of Charles Darwin's famous book. A literally world-changing book, Darwin put forward the anti-religious and scientific idea that humans in fact evolved over millions of generations from animals, starting with fish, all the way up through the ranks to apes, then to our current form.

Story
The Professor is Charlotte Brontë's first novel albeit the last to have been published. Edited and distributed by Arthur Bell Nicholls, two years after Brontë's death, it is based on her experiences of living as a language student in Brussels. The Professor follows the career and love affairs of William Crimsworth, a reserved but compassionate aristocrat who has been ostracised by his family and left penniless.

Sucker for Brontë tale
I found myself suffering along with Agnes each step of the way. Narrator was perfect match.

OK, not brilliant
Interesting, and well read, but not as strong as even a mid-level Gaskell novel.

Enjoyable
The story and the narrator did their job. They both managed to transport me to the world of this patient governess. The first "Nanny Diaries", shedding light on the culture of entitlement.

underrated classic
I think this is the MOST unappreciated of the Bronte sisters' works. Although it starts out slowly, the listen is worthwhile for the prose, novel structure and commentary on 19th century women's roles, especially the "governess" - who appears as only a shadow in most 19th centry lit.

If Anne Bronte Had Lived Another Ten Years
Did you notice in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, during a none too polite discussion (shall we say snide and belittling discussion) of governesses by Miss Ingraham and her friends in front of the governess Jane Eyre, there was a mention of a former governess, Miss Grey? I think this is subtle reference to her sister Anne's book and her actual work. I tend to view the Bronte sisters as a single entity, a literary corporation with each work a different facet of one being. While I have seen some slighting remarks concerning Anne Bronte, I think that if she had lived, she could have easily been the greatest writer of the three sisters. At 26, she had already written The Tenant at Wildfell Hall, Agnes Grey and some very respectable poetry. These are remarkable achievements for one so young. She has nothing for which to blush. Her detractors do.
Have you ever wished to come back to visit these families for whom Miss Grey worked a ten year later? Can you imagine in what dreadful state they would have fallen? Miss Grey with her firm principles and hard work would have risen ever higher while her betters would have sunk ever deeper toward disaster. With some flights of wild imagination and cameos by the supernatural, the Brontes wrote what could be termed docu-dramas. They stuck rather close to the truth. Indeed, from Charlotte Bronte's letters and other papers as well as Elizabeth Gaskell's biography of Charlotte, all the Bronte books can be viewed for the most part as honest reporting rather than fictional fancy. Only the names have been changed to protect the guilty. Oh, before I quit, of course, Agnes Grey rides off into the sunset with her man into happy ever after. It was a struggle to get to happy ever after but she did get there.

A different time and place
A slower time, less of instant gratification, and certainly a different approach to people and their stations in life, but I found many things that haven't changed a bit. Just try to tell someone that their children won't behave. Few parents do anything more than get angry with the messenger. I really enjoyed this book, and the thought of reading it when it was published. If you are looking for current times, shopping malls, cell phones, etc. then this classic is not for you.
I think I'll bind a hard copy for myself and the shelf. I quite enjoyed my time with this book.

Very well-done! Infused With Life-Giving Biblical Principles.
Just finished this for the second time & enjoyed it as much or more than before. Simple story of a young girl & her early struggles. With much perseverance & a steady determination she prospered and reached her goal of having “a true friend” for life. This book could be very beneficial to a young person as they contemplate their future & seek to understand the building blocks necessary for real joy and happiness. The rest of us can enjoy and be reminded of the things that really matter.

one of the problems with reviewing classics....
I am listening to these with a 21st century ear, and purposefully don't do a lot of research before reading a classic, just because I do want a genuine response -- and if intrigued I'll do my research later. The fun aspects of this book are the title character's experiences as a governess with...uniformly terrible children. These scenes are vivid and real, but the plot is predicatable, the ending pat...may have been more riveting in it's time but I thought a rather trivial read and so has not stood the test of time as so many other wonderful classics have.
