About this listen

After a life in various war zones, Dell and Dolly have settled in this town, fulfilling Dolly's lifelong dream. Though she has given up her nursing career and moved smoothly into civilian life, Dell had been a mercenary, so they both have to sacrifice their prior identities. When the star of the girls' softball team shoots and kills the most popular boy in school, Dolly asks Dell to uncover the motive behind this inexplicable crime. It doesn't take him long to uncover a horrifying rite of passage. The pitcher's guilt is not in doubt, yet she deserves a trial, so Dell and Dolly must put together a defense. What they discover culminates in a decision to put the town itself on trial.

Another Must-Read from Vachss

As with all Vachss' books, you cannot put it down. As a therapist I feel I am learning a lot, and as a writer and reader, I am enthralled.

Excellent

Outstanding narration, per usual for PG and NR.

The story started out on the odd side, but quickly grew on me. Loved this listen; well worth a credit.

More great Vachss

Very good voice acting overall, appropriate to the genre and characters. But the French ... I have never heard such atrociously pronounced French in my life. Beyond painful- it was incomprehensible.

Vachss hits a solid triple

What made the experience of listening to Aftershock the most enjoyable?

The story was well developed and had a very tantalizing back story.

What other book might you compare Aftershock to and why?

I don't think anyone else writes like Vachss. There were some parallels to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series, but only because the subject matter covered some similar ground; built in system of violence against women.

Which scene was your favorite?

The flash backs to when the protagonist and his partner met.

Any additional comments?

A very well done story. The characters were interesting and the timeline flowed very well.

Aftershock By Vachss Rocks!

Would you listen to Aftershock again? Why?

I would definitely listen to Aftershock again and again. It reminds me of Hard Candy by Vachss which I read over a decade and a half ago. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Thanks again Andrew, the children of the secret are still reading and listening!

What other book might you compare Aftershock to and why?

Hard Candy, Sacrifice, Flood, Shella, and Strega. All Vachss books written with love and razor blades in equal parts.

What does Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Phil and Natalie were exemplary in their depiction of Vachss's book of characters that are so tightly wound that they would snap in two like a wood board if their burden was any heavier. Phil and Natalie were absolutely 100% authentic in their smooth depiction of Andrew's work. I would love to hear another Vachss novel that was read by these two.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

My tag line for a film of this book would be Aftershock . . . grabs you by the short hairs and does not let go!

Liked other Vachss series, not this one

I have read several of the Burke series, but this one simply has too many holes in it.

Serial killings, child rape, and mercenary torture, and there's never one mention of the police and any such action they may be taking against these events.

It's like Dell simply operates in a vacuum, with no other outside influences from the city or community that he lives in.

No mention of these events in the newspaper or TV. Like no one knows anything is happening except for Dell!

Eye Opener

Would you try another book from Andrew Vachss and/or Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross ?

I love N. ross and P Gigante, so I purchased this book. Not sure if I like Andrew Vachss as the book started out very dark. Subject very different...I did not realize this was not a romance story. Anything but, and it turned out to be a good listen

Which scene was your favorite?
