This was an enjoyable Post-Apocalyptic tale

I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic stories, especially those featuring Zombies, and was excited to discover there would also be vampires. Though I had never read any of Melissa Gibbo’s work, nor listened to Piper Lewis’ narration, I was anxious to jump in.

One night while sitting around a fire with some new friends, a stranger approaches Squirrel and her companions with a free meal and an offer. In exchange for food he would help hunt Zombies and protect the group. The catch? The stranger, known as Cal, is a Vampire and blood is the sustenance he requires. Seeing no better option for survival the Nova Nocte is born. Over the course of the following months; the group sets up a base with walls and cabins, meets a new vampire, welcomes in new survivors, and even rid themselves of some.

This was an enjoyable Post-Apocalyptic tale. Though the story doesn’t bring a lot of new ideas, the book was well written, nicely executed, and never felt too tired. The main character was pretty good, though perhaps a little too trusting. However, you can see a change in that character trait over the course of the book, which was a relief to me. I’m also a big fan of Cal, a former member of the Roman Legion turned Vampire. I really hope Melissa Gibbo adds more character to an already intriguing persona.

The audio quality of the book was very good. The narrator, Piper Lewis, who is also new to me, did a pretty good job at telling the story. She was easy to understand, read clearly, and did a decent job of giving the characters individual voices. My only complaint with the narration is the tone of the reader. Her voice was monotonous and she did not display much emotion in her reading. That being said, I would not hesitate to spend a credit on her works.

Overall, a pretty interesting audiobook for anyone who may be a fan of Post-Apocalyptic stories. Good storytelling with an intriguing ending and, from my limited research, a fairly new narrator with plenty of potential to be great.

An enjoyable listen.

Any additional comments?

What drew me to this was the fact that there were Vampires and Zombies in this story!! It sounded so good, so I had to give it a go, and even though I didn't love it, I'm still glad I did. It's an enjoyable listen.

Plot wise, it was pretty slow at the start and I struggled with it. I found a lot of time was spent doing needless things but being the first book in the series, I figured it was setting the scene. Anyway, I enjoyed the fact that we have a zombie outbreak and then the vampires decide to make there presence known. So the survivors not only have zombies to deal with, but they have vampires, and other survivors that will do anything to survive, even turn on each other. It added a little extra to the zombie book.

One problem I had with the story was the characters. There weren't that many I actually liked!! Now I know that in a situation like they are thrown into, you have to become hard to survive but I just found all of them to be unlikable and with little compassion. Squirrel especially comes across like this though we do see a little development throughout the story, which was great. I hope she develops further as the series progresses. I did love the vamps though!! They were so witty and added much needed levity to the story.

In all this is a good post apocalyptic book. It's well written and entertaining and I love what we find out about the outbreak near the end!! It's a series that can only get better so I will definitely be checking out the next one in the series.

I really enjoyed the narration. Piper Lewis did a great job with the characters and giving them their own personalities. She has a pleasant voice and was easy to listen to, She also gave the right amount of atmosphere when needed!

intro to post apocalyptic vampire/zombie survival

Would you try another book from Melissa Gibbo and/or Piper Lewis?

Yes, in fact I already have listened to the next book in this sereis

Would you be willing to try another book from Melissa Gibbo? Why or why not?

I would be willing to read more by Melissa Gibbo, as she takes a pseudo realistic 'what would I do' look at a zombie world, oh, and there are vampires too.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Piper Lewis?

I am finding that there are two types of narrators, readers and performers, Piper is pleasant sounding, precise in her diction, but comes off a little mechanical. I would love to hear more work from her in a performance.
