Publisher's summary

This program includes three bonus interviews with the author.

The world's leading expert on near-death experiences reveals his journey toward rethinking the nature of death, life, and the continuity of consciousness.

Cases of remarkable experiences on the threshold of death have been reported since ancient times, and are described today by 10% of people whose hearts stop. The medical world has generally ignored these “near-death experiences”, dismissing them as “tricks of the brain” or wishful thinking. But after his patients started describing events that he could not just sweep under the rug, Dr. Bruce Greyson began to investigate.

As a physician without a religious belief system, he approached near-death experiences from a scientific perspective. In After, he shares the transformative lessons he has learned over four decades of research. Our culture has tended to view dying as the end of our consciousness, the end of our existence - a dreaded prospect that for many people evokes fear and anxiety.

But Dr. Greyson shows how scientific revelations about the dying process can support an alternative theory. Dying could be the threshold between one form of consciousness and another, not an ending but a transition. This new perspective on the nature of death can transform the fear of dying that pervades our culture into a healthy view of it as one more milestone in the course of our lives. After challenges us to open our minds to these experiences and to what they can teach us, and in so doing, expand our understanding of consciousness and of what it means to be human.

Featured Article: Comforting Audiobooks About Grief and Loss That Actually Help

When it comes to the death of a loved one, there is no easy path forward. Grieving can place significant mental strain on those who are mourning. And because everyone grieves a little differently, it can be hard to know where to turn for help, or what to say to someone who is in the throes of grief. Audiobooks on grief can offer insight to those looking for ways to support the mourning, or a bit of comfort for anyone struggling with loss themselves.

Dr Greysons magnum opus

this work shows that there is so much more to Consciousness than brain activity. in fact the trend seems to be the less brain activity the more the experiencer experiences.

extreme anxiety turned into hope

I thought this book was fantastic... after my early 20s, I developed a significant fear of death. So, naturally, I avoided the subject.
Then my charming, silly and dearest grandfather died 3 weeks ago and I want to know that he is in a better place. I need to know.
This book did not 100% confirm an afterlife... but it greatly reduced my anxiety around death and it gave me hope that our death may actually lead to a new, better type of existence and that my grandfather is hopefully in that existence now.

The performance was great too. the narrator's voice is pleasant and he reads the book as if he is very interested in the topic but has a healthy dose of skepticism.

Fear is the folly here

Dr Greyson is easy to listen to and clearly well-versed on NDEs. while still hesitant to articulate the impact his research has had on him personally, perhaps because of his desire to maintain impartiality, I felt my own perspective shifting as I listened. I belive our primary purpose here is to evolve spiritually. This book helps. spiritual development comes as we shed out attachment to fear....accepting that we are extensions of the Divine, and created from perfect love, helps shed the idea that we dwell in a hosti, hosting, environment. Thank you Bruce.

“After” and now

This is a valuable book which I would recommend only to people who are concerned about their selves, I.e., everyone. Greyson demonstrates a laudable open-mindedness in his scientific inquiry into NDE’s. He demonstrates that, while anecdotes themselves don’t allow formulation of scientific conclusions, massive amounts of anecdotes become data which can be stored, mined, and analyzed to allow meaningful conclusions. Raised in an a-theistic family under the tutelage of a professional skeptic father, Greyson shows himself open-minded enough to admit the existence of a reality that is not materialistically quantifiable. He demonstrates the truth of the maxim: mind like parachute-only function when open. His book is fascinating and inspiring. He goes as far as his information will take him and admits when he has gone as far as he can.

exploring the afterlife

is this physical life it? how do we look beyond the rat race and what is real? the compendium of NDEs helps one to look at our own lives and what we are doing and then ask ourselves why. these experiences have something to share to enrich our lives while we are here. dr greyson's medical research provides the commonalities of the NDE and the experience that our minds live beyond our physical bodies.
