About this listen

In the latest novel from number-one best-selling author Paulo Coelho, a woman attempts to overcome midlife ennui by rediscovering herself in a passionate relationship with a man who had been a friend in her youth.

A woman in her 30s begins to question the routine and predictability of her days. In everybody's eyes, she has a perfect life: happy marriage, children, and a career. Yet what she feels is an enormous apathy. All that changes when she encounters a successful politician who had, years earlier, been her high school boyfriend. As she rediscovers the passion missing from her life, she will face a life-altering choice.

Boring, describes 30 year olds as people in their 50s with midlife crisis

The voice sounds like a person in their 50s, then we figure out most of the characters are in their 30s and in deep midlife crisis. One of the worst books by Paolo Coelho in my opinion.

Not so good...

Would you try another book from the authors and/or Susan Denaker?

I would try another book from Paulo Coelho but not the narrator.

What was most disappointing about the authors’s story?

It was such a boring story, it just felt so dramatic all the time.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator doesn't not help. She's over dramatic even when she's talking about non-dramatic topics.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Nope.

Any additional comments?

The story was just flat, boring and very disappointing to be honest. I love Paulo Coelho and I have read most of his books, but this one is definitely not one of his best ones. The narrator was extremely dramatic all the time. I kept waiting for the book to get better but it never did.

Mixed feelings!

I definitely enjoyed the eloquence and complexity of the writing along with the superb quality of the narrator! The main character however seemed like she should be at a mile stone 20 years later not in her 30s. She came across to me whining, long to listen! However parts of the book are gems, so it’s worth a read but not in my favorite pile!

Boring at times

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not really, it's little bit boring and not much happens.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's voice sounds way older than the female character's. That makes the character seem lot older and more serious and boring.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

Voice sounded soo sad, perfect life but bored out of her mind

I heard about half of the book before I decided to stop torturing myself just to finish it and came to the conclusion that maybe I was not in the target audience because I couldn’t relate at all, the protagonist was in a depression, she couldn’t find anything to make her happy but she was also living in a life without struggles; rich, nice husband, good job, good kids

Paulo does it again!

It amazes me how Paulo can get into the mind of a woman, pull the reader in so quickly, portray truth and teach you a few things along the way.

It's slightly more than ok.

Good ending message and some parts were interesting but I lost interest because I was not too fond of the narrator. For some reason her voice annoyed me.

Great detail of adult crises

This gives great detail into the mind of married couples who fall into crises in this modern society. The book goes on way too long, however, and is extremely repetitive. Could’ve been a short story.

Great novel!

Keep an open mind when picking up this great novel! The story of Linda, a working mother of two with a “perfect” husband (as she describes him), has an affair. The author takes you on journey into the mind of a woman’s psyche. Beyond the erotic plot and steamy sex scenes, this novel has many spiritual references to love, self discovery and acceptance. Coelho’s message is very profound: It’s only through loving and being loved that we can find true happiness. The title is direct "sex outside the marriage" that is an event, but not the message of the book. By no means does this mean I support or condone infidelity (don't come for me).

"We will not fear the darkness, because we are partners of the light"-Paulo Coelho
