Publisher's summary

Discover the mind behind the modern economy.
This edition features a custom introduction offering biographical insight into Adam Smith’s life and the historical context that shaped his revolutionary ideas. From his early years in Scotland to his mentorship under moral philosopher Francis Hutchinson, uncover the journey that culminated in two of history’s most influential works.

The Wealth of Nations (1776), presented in its complete, unabridged version, laid the foundation for modern economic theory. Divided into five parts, Smith’s analysis of self-interest, free markets, and the division of labor continues to shape economic policies worldwide.

The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), which Smith considered his most important work, explores human morality. Smith argues that empathy—what he called a “mutual sympathy of sentiments”—plays a crucial role in shaping our actions toward others.

Together, these works present a complete vision of Smith’s philosophy: a world where human behavior is driven by both economic self-interest and moral responsibility. His timeless ideas remain essential for understanding the complex relationship between economics and human nature, and continue to influence thought today.

Spanning over 57 hours, whether you're studying economics, philosophy, or seeking to grasp the foundations of capitalism and morality, the Adam Smith Collection offers an unparalleled journey into the mind of the father of modern economics.

Economics + Empathy = Mind Blown

Who knew Adam Smith was this cool? I picked up the Adam Smith Collection thinking I’d just skim the big ideas, but wow—this is deep stuff! The Wealth of Nations really breaks down how markets work, and you start to see the world through a totally new lens. But the surprise for me was The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Smith goes beyond money and talks about how empathy and morality fit into our everyday decisions. It’s like getting both sides of his brain—economics and ethics. If you’re curious about how capitalism started and want to dive into some timeless philosophy, this collection is a solid choice.

Perfect for economics students

Listening to this audiobook has really shifted my perspective as an economics student. This in-depth exploration into Adam Smith’s work brought his theories to life in a way that textbooks alone never could. The custom introduction is incredibly valuable, offering the perfect backdrop to understand the man behind ideas that continue to shape modern economics. The audiobook presents The Wealth of Nations in its complete, unabridged form, providing a rich look into Smith’s views on self-interest, free markets, and the division of labor—all concepts that are essential for anyone studying economics today.

But what surprised me the most was The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Smith’s thoughts on empathy and human morality offered an unexpected perspective that goes beyond typical economic theory. This emphasis on the “mutual sympathy of sentiments” gave me a new appreciation for the ethical dimension of economics, and it’s something that I now see as deeply relevant to our current economic landscape.

A 57 hour audiobook was definitely an investment of time, but one that has reshaped my understanding of economics in the best way.

How economies work and its moral implications

On the plus side, the insights into self-interest and the balance between personal gain and societal good felt surprisingly relevant even today. I found myself reflecting on how these concepts apply in our modern world. However, the length of the audiobook can be a bit daunting; it’s definitely a commitment to get through it all. Some sections may feel repetitive, especially if you’re not super into economics.

Understand the philosophy behind our current world

I’ve always been curious about the forces shaping our world and what really drives human behavior. This is why I found the Adam Smith Collection so fascinating.

It pairs “The Wealth of Nations” with “The Theory of Moral Sentiments”, offering not only the classic breakdown of free markets and self-interest but also a deep dive into the moral side of our actions.

Taken together, these works paint an incredibly detailed picture of what makes society tick, striking a precarious balance between personal gain and a genuine sense of empathy.

This audiobook collection is incredibly long—57 hours. So there is certainly a lot of material to work through. I found throughout that it was amazing how much these works speak to modern issues, even though they are hundreds of years old.

There’s so much depth in here, and you will find a lot to think about. As for me personally, I left with a new appreciation for how economics and morality intersect. This classic read is certainly well worth your time. A definite recommend.

Great educational book

One of the greatest minds in economics, Adam Smith is the name known to anyone. This collection is great educational material if you want to learn the foundation for modern economic theory. His other work is about human morality. It's a less-known book but interesting. Both books represent where both economic self-interest and moral responsibility drive human behavior.
