About this listen

New York Times best-selling and Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi gift-wraps 15 short takes on the holiday season - interviews with holiday notables, "informational" articles about TV specials and Christmas carols, short stories and poems, and even a couple of nods to Thanksgiving and New Year’s - and puts them all into a stocking stuffer-sized package that makes the perfect gift for friends, family, or yourself.

The very Scalziest of Christmases

It's hard to summarize this better than the title already does. The humor is classic Scalzi, as is the irreverence, and the occasional heartfelt moments. I really enjoyed this anthology and look forward to listening to it again next December as well.

I want more!

This really brightened my time while sealing drafty doors ahead of a big snowstorm during a pandemic, which is no small feat. I hope he does a second volume. I am adding this to Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris as one of my go-to listens when I need some offbeat holiday humor and commentary.

Very Scalzian indeed!

In the intro Scalzi promises that the stories will cheer us up, make us laugh and that there's one that will make his mother in law cry.

Well, I got cheered up, laughed and ugly cried on the damn story.

This is short, sweet and fulfilling, much like a Christmas dinner at your parents house. I highly recommend both.

ps Being Brazilian, there were some references that got way over my head and I had to look up online, but American folks will laugh a lot.

Warm, awesome squishy Christmas goodness for the whole family

This was the light fluffy fun you want from a fun, holiday gift bag from your favorite author. It had laughs, chuckles, a few ho-ho-hos, and even a tear or two for the heartwarming by the fire types. Seriously, I absolutely enjoyed this. PLUS,Plus, seeing or hearing some of my favorite narrators sort of step out of the box as it were, and do something ai Monty Python had a knack for saying, "Completely different." It was great and I recommend it to anybody looking for something not quite Hallmark Christmas, but sure to bring a smile to your face nonetheless. Thanks John, for, yet, another awesome read. And, Merry Christmas, to one and all.

Enjoy, no matter what time of year it is...

I'm always looking forward to the Christmas season because I love Christmas stories and I love finding that perfect tale of home, love, and hope, from authors that I adore... And so I chose this book...
There are several stories in this collection that are very typical Scalzi: Amusing, witty, etc, but I don't suggest that you buy this one at full price, unless that is, you're a huge Scalzi fan (raises own hand). LOL!
But, there are at least two stories in here that very much fills my needs: Christmas in July... a delightful Christmas story, albeit at the wrong time of year, and the other was Sarah's Sister, both stories are brimming with all the love, hope and family joy I could ever want!
So have a Merry Christmas... no matter what time of year it is!

Creative writing

Interviews with Santa’s lawyer and Innkeeper for birth place of Jesus are great. Additional stories are very good.

A Fun Scalzi Stocking Stuffer

This one does exactly what it says on the tin. It's generally light, easy listening expertly narrated. Don't like a certain story, vignette, or essay? Not to worry! It won't be long before a new one starts. I laughed a few times and smiled throughout most of it, and I'm sure I'll go back and listen to bits of in the future.

enjoyed it!

This one was pretty interesting and entertaining and perfect for a quick Christmas read or listen. It's a collection of short stories.I laughed a few times. Some of the stories were more heartfelt than funny and sometimes I wasn't sure when one started and when one began because I was listening to it while driving and I feel like you really have to be paying attention. There were some adorable stories in here and i loved how one was told kind of like the night before christmas. Some of the stories were told in interview style but It was a pretty enjoyable listen. I'm not even sure how to review this one but I liked it.

A nice, light romp

This book is an eclectic mix of faux interviews with characters like the Christmas Bunny, alongside stories of a little more depth and heft, some of which are humorous, and others deeply poignant.

The content is a little all-over-the-place thematically, except for one thing--the author's love of Christmas. The performances are great as well.

If you're looking for a fun alternative to Christmas music for that road trip, you'll have some fun here.
