About this listen

Summer 2018. Britain is basking in a rare heatwave. And Hazel and Dorothy Wilding are working together to clear their family farm high on the North Yorkshire moors.

The sisters have been estranged for 42 years. And they’re not happy to be forced together now.

Dorothy has always been a dutiful daughter. She’s a regular chapel-goer. She never married. And she’s stayed on the farm all her life, working in the family B & B.
Hazel, is lesbian. She lives in London, where she runs her own business in partnership with her gay best friend Vinny.

The two women seem irretrievably locked in bitterness. Though they loved each other once.

But then two long-lost figures suddenly re-emerge from the past. And the sisters are forced to look back on a much earlier heatwave summer from 1967. The summer when everything went wrong between them. The summer that broke their hearts.

An interesting read

Not having been raised with a sister showed an interesting take on growing up with one. A decision that is made at a young age and the results that are carried forward for your entire life and how it effects a whole family. How fate can bring one’s life into a full circle. A delightful listen/read well worth your time.

(really) older women

I was surprised to find that the main characters in this book were over 60! I've enjoyed all of Jane Retzig's books that I've read so far, and this one was no exception. I especially enjoyed the storyline, and watching two older sisters finally make peace after a hurt from 40 years prior.

Great story, great writing, great narration

Very different from what I usually read (or listen to, in this case). One summer day of 1976 changed Hazel and Dorothy’s lives forever. Hazel had to leave the family farm that day and never came back. 42 years later, her sister needs her help (she slipped a disc and is moving out). There’s a lot of bitterness and pettiness between the two sisters as they are forced together again and come to realize not everything has happened as they believed and the other is not necessarily the awful person either thought.

I’m not usually a fan of going back and forth between the past and the present but the author makes it work seamlessly.

The narration was very good, though it took me a few minutes to get used to the accent 😉 The only character I didn’t really feel was the gay best friend but it wasn’t a real problem.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book!
