About this listen

The founder of Byrner, a global social media platform, Gerald Byrne is universally admired as a visionary, a philanthropist, and a devoted husband and father. And every person who gets in the way of his good work seems to die.

When a former student commits suicide, English professor and ex-spy Cameron Winter takes it upon himself to understand why. The young man was expelled from the university in an unfortunate episode that left Winter sympathetic to his plight; after a prolonged silence, he reached out to his teacher with two words just before taking the fatal plunge from the roof of his San Francisco apartment: "Help me."

Winter has what he calls "a strange habit of mind"—the ability to imagine himself into a crime scene, to reconstruct it mentally and play through various possible causes and outcomes to understand exactly what took place. When he applies this exercise to Adam Kemp's desperate final moments, he discovers a troubling inconsistency. And when he learns that Kemp was in a tumultuous relationship with Gerald Byrne's niece, he begins to suspect that the suicide was the result of a carefully-engineered plot, put in motion by the powerful businessman.

There are no e's in Klavan

Klavan at his very best. can't wait for the next book on this series. Klavan shows the best his got and if you follow him, this book has small hints at his ideas and perspectives.

Fantastically Captivating.

Another fantastic performance from Andrew Klavan. You cannot help but feel as though you are Cameron Winter living the thriller chapter by chapter. The arrangement of action adventure phycology and the classics have never been more masterfully executed. I cannot wait for the 3rd installment of the Cameron Winter series!

Amazing book

I loved the prose and the depth of the story. The book was provocative without being pornographic. I highly recommend this novel. It’s going to be a movie series one day!

Better than the first

I liked “When Christmas Comes” the first book in this series. While that book covers the protagonist’s childhood, this one examines his backstory concerning his training and life as a covert operative. This sequel I enjoyed even more. Perhaps it’s because I’m a psychologist I appreciated the characters wrestling with his own personal tragedies and relationship with his therapist. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Great fiction or is it?

Fabulous and appropriate to the times. Think about the global reset and how at least one character reflects that wish.

Another great story!

Hopefully, this series continues. The character of Professor Winter is very rich and intriguing. More background is divulged in this installment and really adds to the depth of this universe. There are so many directions Klaven could go with Winter, and the subtle way he weaves in the real world keeps me interested. The narrator is as amazing and consistent as the first book. Again, I hope there are many more.

Another masterpiece from Mr. Klavan

This book is a fantastic (listen) read. The characters are so deep and detailed it’s hard to adequately describe their creation adequately. This book is spy novel meets English literature, with the constant suspense and poetic references. This is a great book for the action lover, along with the gray and convoluted nature of right and wrong in life.
