About this listen

"I'm not a coward, but when 11-inch shells come screaming at you, well, I know why the Navy supplies two pairs of pants."

If you like Max Hastings and World War II naval history, then you will love this autobiography, which gives an easy-to-understand insider view of life in the Royal Navy during the war. Ronnie Turner had set his sights on a career with the Royal Navy, and like Ant Middleton, he wouldn't stop until he'd achieved his goal of having "a smack at the boche".

His quest plucked him from his home in Liverpool and led him to the exotic temptations of Rio, freezing Falkland storms, and searching for a heavily armed German raider in a rowboat with six scousers and a padre.

Drawn from Ronnie's illegal war diary, this enjoyable tale of pocket battleships, torpedoed crews, and Admiral Harwood's tattoos, all sprinkled with Spike Milligan-like humor, make this a story you won't want to put down.

A no BS, real sailor's story

I enjoyed this way more than some book written from an officer's point of view. This war diary and the comments, written by the sailor's nephew, tell you more about the course of the war for the British and what it would have been like for a real sailor. Painting the ship, gun practice, long watches, escorting deserters and spending your pay on shore leave. All the while, the Royal Navy makes sure the Uruguayans and Argentines don't swing towards Hitler, then escorting troop transports up to reclaim North Africa from the Italians. An angle on the war most people miss. Just goes to show: sometimes the important jobs aren't the ones that get all the glory. Well done!
