About this listen

What is a sensitive classical pianist doing in a sleazy WWII Parisian cabaret? Why is he keeping his Chopin sheet music inside the piano bench every night? Which two people from his past have scarred his soul forever?

Winter Pale, a young beautiful foreigner, a girl with a painful past of her own, recounts his story and, with it, delves deep into her own soul.

This short story from the backstage of the award winning historical novel Winter Pale sheds light on the character of Louis, the exceptional, poetic, and visionary pianist of "The Golden Doe" club, and is a perfect standalone as well as an insightful complementary read to the main story of Winter Pale.

A deeply emotional, thought-provoking, and intriguing character revelation for lovers of The War in our Hearts, Promise at Dawn, and At Swim, Two Boys.

One-hour masterpiece

A short audiobook and an independent production? If you're unsure, I'll say yes a hundred times! I can't remember the last time I felt so engaged listening to something. It's like a mini-stageplay you can enjoy simply by plugging in your earbuds. Such a moving but also thought-provoking story, genuine feeling in the voices, and incredible music to accompany the narration. As a fan of George Bizet, I was delighted to see how that piece from The Pearl Fishers was modified and performed. A work of art!

The music and narrative are threaded beautifully!

After reading the novel “Winter Pale” I sure wanted to know more about some of the characters because the author’s writing style is elegant and engaging.

Listening to this short story about Louis the pianist was a very nice experience. I love how the music and narrative of the story are threaded effortlessly to create a great experience for the listener. The fact that the author Marina Koulouri narrates as Winter Pale makes it even more special (well, I like when the authors narrate their own books).

Even if you haven’t read the novel “Winter Pale” listening to this short story will be a great experience for you. When I was listening to this story I thought about how we have become so accustomed to consuming videos, music, movies, etc. so fast and that is becoming rare to stop and listen to something and really take time to just enjoy it. Well, this is the type of audiobook to just listen to and enjoy.

Spoiler alert: the music at the end is fantastic!
