Publisher's summary

About the book A Saudi Hospital in the Empty Quarters.

It became a ritual. Visitors strolled from the desert wanting to see relatives in our ICU. They carried rifles and bandolier and waited, perplexed, while guards explained they had to leave their guns at the door. Eventually they posted a sign at the entrance but forgot they could not read. . .

In the early 90s, I joined a medical team opening a new Saudi hospital in a remote providence where most citizens had never encountered foreigners. Working with more than 30 nationalities we struggled with challenges trying to integrate our cultures, practice medicine in less-than-ideal circumstances, and find common ground so we could treat a bewildered population who just one generation ago lived in mud huts and tents. Join me for a rare glimpse into Saudi Arabia through the eyes of a foreigner; where misunderstanding is a daily occurrence and being a stranger in a strange land requires patience, sanity, and a splash of humor. It became a ritual.

Welcome to Saudi Arabia of 1991, a nation at the crossroads between the old and new.

This 4th edition is packed with additional information and includes new photographs of this vanished world.

Dresden Walkaboutdude Moss’s experience living in the Middle East began with the first US invasion of Iraq in 1990. He made two contracts in Saudi Arabia, one setting up a new hospital in a remote town and another running a department during the terrorist attacks in Riyadh in 2002. When he was not helping the Saudi population, he explored the country and history and visited with locals to understand a culture unavailable to outsiders. He sometimes witnessed shocking events and felt the peril ex-pats faced each day. He has written two books based on his diaries.
