Story
In his landmark best seller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant, in the blink of an eye, that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?

So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in digestible chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day.

The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

Story
From the celebrated neurobiologist and primatologist, a landmark, genre-defining examination of human behavior, both good and bad, and an answer to the question: Why do we do the things we do? Sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: He starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.

The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

And how do we grapple with the imponderables of morality, religion, and consciousness?

Is the apparent “grand design” of our universe evidence of a benevolent creator who set things in motion—or does science offer another explanation? In The Grand Design, Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow present the most illuminating scientific thinking about these and other abiding mysteries of the universe, in nontechnical language marked by brilliance and simplicity.

Nearly everyone swears - whether it's over a few too many drinks, in reaction to a stubbed toe, or in flagrante delicto. And yet we sit idly by as words are banned from television and censored in books. We insist that people excise profanity from their vocabularies, and we punish children for yelling the very same dirty words that we'll mutter in relief seconds after they fall asleep. Swearing, it seems, is an intimate part of us that we have decided to selectively deny.

They are the young Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and longtime friend Raymond Aron, a fellow philosopher who raves to them about a new conceptual framework from Berlin called phenomenology. "You see," he says, "if you are a phenomenologist, you can talk about this cocktail and make philosophy out of it!"

Story
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

Story
The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Not too deep, but good variety
Good introduction into the current state of the physics, psychology, and biology of time. Not too dense, but still college level.

A little hard to follow
The biggest drawback of this publication is that the reader has a very distinctive almost robotic quality to his presentation. Without specific nuanced inflections in his voice, you cannot determine which parts are more or less significant and therefore much of the meaning islost. The effect is similar to the removal of punctuation.

Wow, so comprehensive and eclectic. Perfect!
Loved this. Detail enough to say something and diverse angles enough to have what it says actually mean something. Thank you so much. One of my favorite things ever!

Semi-successful Discussion Difficult for this Layman
I like to challenge my Liberal Arts educated Brain with occasional ventures into discussions of scientific issues. Most often I come away amazed by the complexity of the research into Physics, Biology and Neuroscience but I keep trying. This was another of those times, excuse the pun.
A simple concept like Time has brought the greatest Minds of Western Science to their proverbial knees and their efforts are well documented here, though I have to admit I came away with only an appreciation of how not-simple the concept of Time is.
The experience of mental gymnastics was still enjoyable. Four Stars.

THOUGHT PROVOKING
Covers a vast amount of viewpoints over a broad spectrum of time... LoL! A serous look at time... While I do not agree with all the viewpoints put forward in this compilation... It stands well on it on own... Well worth a second going over! Really, I think it is suitable for for just about any introspective soul, especially those who delve into Physics, Philosophy, or Psychology. Thumbs Up!

Painful to listen to
Interesting papers but not meant to be read aloud. The reader was not good. His voice was basically flat, no expression and barely took a break between articles. Buy the book instead.

Good collection of works about time
Time is a lodestone for physicists but a challenging and incomprehensible subject. The variety of approaches to explain it is as heterogeneous as embarrassing. All in all, I deem this series of works an appropriate summary of the current state of the art. Do not worry if you will feel confused at the end of the book.
