About this listen

Twenty-year-old Meriwether Walker enjoys the challenge of teaching her varied group of students in the one-room schoolhouse. What she doesn't like is the nomadic lifestyle that comes with it as she rotates boarding with families in the community on a month-to-month basis.

Meriwether longs for a home of her own, but since single female teachers have to follow so many rules, she doesn't see any end to her plight, until the letter from the attorney handling her uncle's estate arrives.

When Meriwether discovers her uncle left her his ranch - the one she loved to visit when she was a child - she quit her job and moved without hesitation to Trickling Springs, Texas, to take over her property. But when she arrives, deed in hand, she discovers her decision has put her at odds with Jake Harrison, the man who rents property from her uncle and seeks to buy the land and water rights for his cattle.

They butt heads, tempers flare, but Meriwether stands her ground. Yet, she can't deny the romantic sparks that fly, and she can tell it's mutual. When he comes courting, can she trust Jake Harrison, or is his real attraction the property and the water rights he needs that she has inherited?

A+!

This is the first book in this series that I've listened to. I thought it was a really cute story. Every so often I'll give a historical romance a listen to, usually by Scott Bennet, and it's like a breath of fresh air. I know these types of stories have a somewhat strong focus on religion (I'm an atheist btw), but that never deters me. I like romance stories but anything set in a current time period... well, there's always a lot of detail in the sex area, that I'm not really interested in. LOL Historical romance, typically, provides the romance aspect and leaves all the nitty-gritty parts out that I don't need or what to know. On another note, while I love looking for mistakes, I feel more satisfied when I complete a story and have only positives to say in response. That was the case here.

Scott Bennet: I'm a huge fan of this narrator! I loved Mr. Bennet's singing. He did a great job as always!

A spiritual and loving story

This was a terrific audiobook with a strong independent heroine and a giving and hardworking man who together care for his brother's children. The children add some humour and excitement and a challenge to the school teacher who has now inherited her uncle's ranch.
The narrator does a wonderful job and his voice is one I can listen to for hours and never get bored.
The author pens a story with characters who challenge and contribute to the story; the bible verses add some food for thought and add to the historical nature of this book.

Mostly enjoyed it

This is a light story & more of a relationship development romance due to the quick & easy resolution of all the conflicts in the story (though even the relationship development itself is pretty quick & easy).

It's decently written and the characters, though a little too stereotypical, & the main characters are a little too perfect , are likeable enough.
Since it wasn't aspiring to anything & hadn't promised more than it delivered, I was ready to rate it fairly well.

***SPOILER ALERT***
The part with the future mother-in-law was where it lost me. The situation was far too easily resolved, for starters; but as meddling, insulting & controlling as she was depicted, there's no way she would have backed down so soon & as easily as she did. The idea that she would turn around and question the integrity of her Jake (the one that no one was good enough for), & then that Jake would say what he did, & of course just as Merriweather came in, was as painfully contrived as it was flat out unbelievable.
**********************
***END SPOILER***

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses

*Religion: This is a Christian story with a lot of Scripture quotes and "God talk". As a devout Christian, I didn't find it too preachy or off-putting, but I suspect most non-Christians might.

A Promised Land

This book was pretty good not great but not bad. The narration was good as a mans voice but horrible as a woman. The overall story was good, I wouldn't read another from this series. Sweet Christian Romance

This was a very sweet historical fiction Christian romance, although very predictable, it was a fun listen. The narrator did a great job and was enjoyable to listen to.

Wonderful

A simply wonderful story of a girl who has the chance to start a new life at a ranch left to her by a relative and the man who has run that ranch for years.. They find love despite the sometimes twisting road to get there. J Scott Bennett is one of my favorite narrators and with the amazing writing of Kimberly Grist, I could only listen at every single spare moment I had!!
