Acerca de esta escucha

When a film star is poisoned in Prohibition-era Philadelphia, private investigator Edie Shippen is on the case in the second Deadly Twenties mystery, perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn and Rhys Bowen.

Philadelphia, 1921. Edie Shippen has officially started her new career as a private investigator . . . even though she has yet to book a client. When she runs into an old friend, the film actress Ava Sylvester, Edie is delighted at the chance to rekindle their relationship. But when Ava's costar and new husband, Duncan, dies suddenly, all signs point to Ava. Edie's first official case begins in earnest, desperately trying to clear her friend's name.

Gilbert Lawless has carved out a peaceful existence as a coroner's assistant. The last thing he wants is to jeopardize his position by involving himself with Edie Shippen. But when the body count racks up, Gilbert finds himself drawn into Edie's investigation on the set of Philadelphia's most famous film studio, where everyone seems to have something to hide.

As the cameras roll, Edie and Gilbert race to catch a poisoner before one of them ends up being the next body in the morgue.

Excellent Read

If you love a character driven whodunit edgier than a cozy but not quite hard-boiled, this is the book and series for you. Edie and Gil return In this second book in the series along with other familiar characters but with fresh outlooks, new experiences, and determination. This book paints a vivid picture of 1920s Philadelphia and the people who reside there through the developing relationship between our two MCs and the challenges they encounter from without and within. While all of that is at play in the background and skillfully woven throughout the story, readers are presented with a compelling murder mystery that takes us inside the emerging film industry as well as the machinations of prohibition America. While it may be cliché to say, I love these characters, particularly Edie and Gil, but also the morally gray characters of Tommy and Leo that provide the edgy and decidedly non-cozy aspect of the stories. I cannot wait to see them (and their relationships) develop, but this book also leaves readers with a shadowy arch that isn't quite a cliffhanger but definitely sends a message of business unresolved. All in all, this one has the best of several worlds (in terms of book genres and literary tropes), and I eagerly await more.
