About this listen

A local basketball star in a small Ohio town tries to remake his life in middle age, but instead must confront a murderer and the prospect of leaving his hometown and giving up everything that once gave his life meaning.

Nicholas “Duke” Ducheski is the most important man in the eastern Ohio steel town of Mingo Junction. Nearly two decades after he made the winning shot in the state championship basketball game, he remains much adored and the focal point of community pride. Hardly a day passes when someone doesn’t want to talk about “the game”. Now approaching 40, Duke no longer wants to be defined solely by something he did when he was 18. So he decides to parlay his local popularity into a successful restaurant - “Duke’s Place”. But no sooner does he get his restaurant up and running than disaster strikes.

“Little Tony” DeMarco, Duke’s brother-in-law and a known mob enforcer, comes into the restaurant and murders Duke’s oldest friend. Now Duke faces the hardest decision of his life. DeMarco thinks he’s untouchable, but Duke discovers a way to take him down, along with his mob superiors. To do so, however, means leaving Mingo Junction and sacrificing his treasured identity as the town legend. And if he follows through, what will remain of his life?

I ended up really liking this book at the end however it took a long time to really get into it. I have read 2 other books by this author that I really enjoyed and this one was a good story in the end but it just took longer to get into the story.....

good story, excellent narration

Robin Yocum is an awesome storyteller. A true craftsman. This story starts off slower than his others, and once in a while it gets a little off track, but the ending makes up for it.

Great Read, Complex

Great story, until the very end. The ending was disappointing. Just felt like it dragged on and was an after thought.

Very good but ending not so much.

It was a fun story full of authenticating details. Clear wording performed imaginatively. Fun plot well developed.

I am disappointed that I couldn’t get into this story. I loved the other 2 books from this author and will probably give another try with a different story. The narrator was a total turn off for me. I only made it to chapter 3 before giving up.
5 stars for his other books, The Essay and Favorite Son’s

Disappointed
