Story
E. M. Forster's first novel is a witty comedy of manners that is tinged with tragedy. It tells the story of Lilia Herriton, who proves to be an embarrassment to her late husband's family as, in the small Tuscan town of Monteriano, she begins a relationship with a much younger Italian man - classless, uncouth, and highly unsuitable. A subtle attack on Edwardian values and a humanely sympathetic portrayal of the clash of two cultures, Where Angels Fear to Tread is also a profound exploration of character and virtue.

One of the best-known Arthurian stories—adapted many times into verse, prose, games, and film. It recounts an adventure undertaken by King Arthur’s famous nephew, Sir Gawain, who is brave and the model of knightly grace. When a mysterious knight in green armor issues a challenge to the Round Table, the gallant Gawain volunteers to do battle for his king, beginning an adventure that explores chivalric tradition, loyalty, and the virtue of forgiveness, as well as alchemical symbolism and the psychological process of individuation.

In the India of 1942, two rapes take place simultaneously - that of an English girl in Mayapore, and that of India by the British. In each, physical violence, racial animosity, the coercion of the weak by the strong all play their part, but playing a part too are love, affection, loyalty, and recognition that the last division of all to be overcome is the colour of the skin.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

In this incandescent novel, V.S. Naipaul takes us deeply into the life of one man, an Indian who, uprooted by the bloody tides of Third World history, has come to live in an isolated town at the bend of a great river in a newly independent African nation. Naipaul gives us the most convincing and disturbing vision yet of what happens in a place caught between the dangerously alluring modern world and its own tenacious past and traditions.

Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Shabby and lumbering, with a face like a Norfolk dumpling, Father Brown makes for an improbable super-sleuth. But his innocence is the secret of his success: refusing the scientific method of detection, he adopts instead an approach of simple sympathy, interpreting each crime as a work of art, and each criminal as a man no worse than himself… Here you will find the complete Father Brown stories in the chronological order of their original publication. The Innocence of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 1, The Wisdom of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 13.

Story
From Boston's social underworld emerges Verena Tarrant, a girl with extraordinary oratorical gifts, which she deploys in tawdry meeting-houses on behalf of "the sisterhood of women." She acquires two admirers of a very different stamp: Olive Chancellor, devotee of radical causes and marked out for tragedy; and Basil Ransom, a veteran of the Civil War who holds rigid views concerning society and women's place therein. Is the lovely, lighthearted Verena made for public movements or private passions?

Story
The Voyage Out is Virginia Woolf's haunting tale about a naïve young woman's sea voyage from London to a small resort on the South American coast. In symbolic, lyrical, and intoxicating prose, her outward journey begins to mirror her internal voyage into adulthood as she searches for her personal identity, grapples with love, and learns how to face life intellectually and emotionally. Its wit and exquisiteness, and its profound depth and insight into humanity, will capture the imagination of the listener.

Published 10 years after Collins’s most popular novel The Woman in White, Man and Wife centres on the confused and inequitable marriage laws of 19th-century Britain, reflecting the author’s own antipathy toward the institution. The plot follows the fortunes of a woman who, committed to marriage with one man, comes to believe that she may have inadvertently married his friend, according to the archaic laws of Scotland and Ireland.

Great Book and great performance
By far, the best audiobook I've ever listened to. Forster shows real genius in this story of colonial India. The performance by the narrator is fantastic. I highly recommend this audiobook.
The movie was good, but the book is even better.

great novel - horrible performance.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It is worth downloading this audiobook for the quality of the literature. However, the performance almost counteracts the value of Forster's prose.
Would you be willing to try another one of Sam Dastor’s performances?
Sam Dastor's performance is torturous to listen to. I listen to audiobooks before I go to sleep. Unlike some other reviewers, I don't have a problem with his Indian accent. But his women. God! They squawk like transgender parrots. After watching the film it's just painful imagining these hellish noises coming out of the mouths of Judy Davis and Peggy Ashcroft. I question whether I will ever be able to maintain an erection again. I can't stress how much this ruined the audiobook. Audible really needs to get a different version of this wonderful book.

India from a Englishman decades ago
Narration is really great, Im not sure how he keeps all the slight variations in order. Granted he sounds a bit silly as a Englishwomen but its clear who the characters are and his reading of the book has a very nice flow. My first E.M. Forster book and Im intrigued, he has a very poetic style but doesnt take the story too seriously either.

IN KEEPING WITH THE RAJ QUARTET
Excellent in every way.. Sam Dastor the perfect narrator. Unlike other reviewers, I did not take offense at his voicing of the female characters. If you saw the movie, he got it just right. Sad and poignant; quiet and colorful depiction of the Raj. An excellent read.

What a pleasant surprise
What a great and pleasant surprise this masterpiece is to me.
I do not recall very many books that portray character to such a remarkable degree. British men and women, Indian Moslems, the servants--20 or 30 years before Great Britain lost India, and tells why it was simply inevitable. This book describes India's people and the British understanding of India than any number of other books.
I recall Samuel Butler's Way of All Flesh, Hemingway's books, the Forsyte Saga come immediately to mind.
The reading was superb. Otherwise, my words are inadequate to describe this book.
Wonder what British royalty thinks of You personally? Read this book!

SEEING THE TREES IN FORSTER
E. M. Forster sees the trees in the forest of complicated life. Considered by some to be one of the best novels ever written, “A Passage to India” is a spectacular listen and terrific read. The story is beautifully narrated by Sam Dastor but the poetry of Forster’s writing shines best in its reading.
Published in 1924, “A Passage to India” is a primer on colonialism, ethnocentricity, and discrimination. Human nature is immutable and omnipresent, a force of good and evil.
The ugliness of colonialism (cultural domination), ethnocentrism, and discrimination is exemplified in Forster’s tour de force. Thankfully, the characters of Mrs. Moore and Ms. Quested give some sliver of hope for mankind’s redemption, a hope for cultural respect and truth.
