About this listen

James de Vere has always insisted on being perfectly pragmatic and rational in all things. It seemed the only way to deal with his overdramatic, greedy family. When he falls ill and no doctor in London can diagnose him, he returns home to Grace Hill in search of a physician who can - or to set his affairs in order.

Arriving at the doctor's home, he's surprised to encounter the doctor's daughter Laura, a young woman he last saw when he was warning her off an attachment with his cousin Graeme. Alas, the doctor is recently deceased and Laura is closing up the estate, which must be sold off, leaving her penniless. At this, James has an inspiration: why not marry the damsel in distress? If his last hope for a cure is gone, at least he'll have some companionship in his final days, and she'll inherit his fortune instead of his grasping relatives, leaving her a wealthy widow with plenty of prospects.

Laura is far from swept off her feet, but she's as pragmatic as James, so she accepts his unusual proposal. But as the two of them brave the onslaught of shocked and suspicious family members, they find themselves growing closer. They vowed, "until death do us part"...but now both are longing for their marriage to be more than momentary in this evocative romance.

Genuinely adore this type of romance story

The undercurrents of this love story grips and holds you. The relationships between Laura and James, James and Claude are well written. This story has everything misunderstandings, understandings, action, passion without vulgarity, intense emotions, This is one of my favorites on Audible. The narrator is excellent, he does "crazy" very well. when the crazy came out I was rolling.

Great Book!

This was another great story by a great author. The narrator was not one I was a fan of. Well worth the listen as the suspense was good.

Story okay but too many graphic sex scenes

The narration was excellent and story plot interesting but there were too many unnecessary graphic sex scenes.

Nice intro to a new-to-me author

A Momentary Marriage is everything a good historical should be: a solid sense of place and time, truly interesting characters, an exciting plot (in this case with a healthy dose of suspense), and a delicious resolution. I'm so glad Candace Camp's work crossed my radar. In terms of narration, though, I have enjoyed Gildart Jackson's work narrating other books, but in this one, his voicing of the hero is particularly grating. I had to continually divorce my ears from my brain and try to process the story without hearing the hero's voice. I listen to enough audio that I've gained experience doing so, but a novice or impatient listener might be turned off and miss a good story.

I really enjoyed this one!

I liked this book more than I thought I would. It has a little bit of everything, Some romance, some mystery, a marriage of convenience. Some likable characters some that are not so nice. Overall a good blend of mystery, intrigue, and love.

Unnecessary scenes

The romance was good, the mystery was good, but some of the scenes were long and drawn out. I loved the dog! I didn't care for the narrative's
voices.

great narration; story sagged near the end

Overall, I really liked this. I thought the narrator was great. The main characters were likeable, especially appreciated how seemingly difficult people could be depicted sympathetically. I really liked the main premise of the book, a variation on the arranged marriage and country house murder tropes. For the 1st 2/3 or so of the book, I was excited to pick this up and listen whenever I could.

Unfortunately, once the main couple admitted their attraction to each other, the book got really boring. I had to force myself to finish.
