Audie Award, History/Biography, 2016
This acclaimed portrait of heroism and ingenuity captures a watershed moment in human history. The astronauts themselves have called it the definitive account of their missions. On the night of July 20, 1969, our world changed forever when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Based on in-depth interviews with 23 of the 24 moon voyagers, as well as those who struggled to get the program moving, A Man on the Moon conveys every aspect of the Apollo missions with breathtaking immediacy and stunning detail.

Historia
Apollo is the behind-the-scenes story of an epic achievement. Based on exhaustive research that included many exclusive interviews, Apollo tells how America went from a standing start to a landing on the moon at a speed that now seems impossible. It describes the unprecedented engineering challenges that had to be overcome to create the mammoth Saturn V and the facilities to launch it. It takes you into the tragedy of the fire on Apollo 1, the first descent to the lunar surface, and the rescue of Apollo 13.

By August 1968, the American space program was in danger of failing in its two most important objectives: to land a man on the moon by President Kennedy's end-of-decade deadline and to triumph over the Soviets in space. With its back against the wall, NASA made an almost unimaginable leap: It would scrap its usual methodical approach and risk everything on a sudden launch, sending the first men in history to the moon - in just four months.

Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River, across the forbidding Rockies, and - by way of the Snake and the Columbia rivers - down to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, endured incredible hardships and witnessed astounding sights. With great perseverance, they worked their way into an unexplored West. When they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead.

In April 1970, during the glory days of the Apollo space program, NASA sent Navy Captain Jim Lovell and two other astronauts on America's fifth mission to the moon. Only 55 hours into the flight of Apollo 13, disaster struck: a mysterious explosion rocked the ship, and soon its oxygen and power began draining away. Written with all the color and drama of the best fiction, Apollo 13 (previously published as Lost Moon) tells the full story of the moon shot that almost ended in catastrophe.

Only the year before, three astronauts had burned to death in their spacecraft, and since then the Apollo program had suffered one setback after another. Meanwhile, the Russians were winning the space race, the Cold War was getting hotter by the month, and President Kennedy's promise to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade seemed sure to be broken.

In Carrying the Fire, Michael Collins conveys, in a very personal way, the drama, beauty, and humor of the adventure of reaching the moon. He also traces his development from his first flight experiences in the air force, through his days as a test pilot, to his Apollo 11 spacewalk, presenting an evocative description of the joys of flight as well as a new perspective on time, light, and movement from someone who has seen the fragile Earth from the other side of the moon.

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation's most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA's effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the 20th century's greatest feat - landing humans on another world.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

When Apollo 11 touched down on the Moon’s surface in 1969, the first man on the Moon became a legend. In First Man, author James R. Hansen explores the life of Neil Armstrong. Based on over 50 hours of interviews with the intensely private Armstrong, who also gave Hansen exclusive access to private documents and family sources, this "magnificent panorama of the second half of the American twentieth century" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) is an unparalleled biography of an American icon.

Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4000 hours in space. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, and been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft. The secret to Col. Hadfield's success - and survival - is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst and enjoy every moment of it.

In August 1968 NASA made a bold decision: In just 16 weeks, the United States would launch humankind's first flight to the moon.

On January 28, 1986, NASA's space shuttle Challenger exploded after blasting off from Cape Canaveral. Christa McAuliffe, America's "Teacher in Space", was instantly killed, along with the other six members of the mission. At least that's what most of us remember. Kevin Cook tells us what really happened on that ill-fated, unforgettable day. He traces the pressures - leading from NASA to the White House - that triggered the fatal order to launch on an ice-cold Florida morning.

Simply Outstanding and worth every penny!
This is a must for anyone even somewhat intersted in histiry, space, Apollo or dreams of a return to manned spaceflight out of LEO.
Get it. You will not regret it!

Great record of the Apollo missions
Loved this book when I read it years ago. Thought I would "read" it again via Audible. I must say Andrew Chaikin has become the go-to authority on all historical Apollo facts and details. I'm so thankful he dedicated himself to that as this book is a great account of the missions.
My only disappointment with the audio book was the reading performance. As if the facts themselves weren't enough to spark awe in the listener, Bronson Pinchot felt he had to impose his own sense of what was important via many mis-placed inflections, and in doing so, did this great work a disservice; e.g. ".. travelling at twenty five .. THOUSAND miles per hour .. ". Additionally his over use of the label "L M" when referring to the lunar module, was cringe worthy. By stating both letters separately each time (instead of using the more appropriate pronunciation "LeM" as is the common vernacular used by NASA), it revealed a lack of knowledge and preparation that became a genuine distraction.

A great takeoff followed up by a flameout
The first half of the book keeps you wanting more every time you pause it. The Apollo 13 accident is the climax of the story. Unfortunately, after that, it seems to turn into a fairly in depth geology lesson. I guess I'm just not that into rocks. Great narration throughout.

Everyone Should Read This
What did you like best about this story?
This is a story that should be well known by people the world over. Andrew Chaikin spent 8 years writing this book -- investing so much time and effort in his research as well as his writing -- and the result is an informative and interesting account of the Apollo program and its ultimate achievements.
Any additional comments?
While I enjoyed Bronson Pinchot's narration for the most part, his consistent and exaggerated emphasis -- particularly for times, quantities, distances, and weights -- became distracting. A book of this nature is chock full of that type of description, so it happened frequently. I found myself wishing he would just say it normally at least once in a while!

Incredible stories of the Apollo missions
This book is an absolutely credible journey from Apollo 1 through Apollo 17. The book is written in a near fiction in like manner, that makes you want to keep listening even after you turn car off.

One of the most amazing stories I’ve ever heard
First let me tell you I am a space fanatic. My mother was a friend of Neil Armstrong and I have an autographed picture of him. I watched the Gemini and Apollo missions on TV when I was a young kid and it made me late for school more times than I can tell.
This book is not just a recitation of the facts which I’ve read before but is a true story that I could hardly put down.
If you’re even remotely interested in space or even if you just like a good story you have to buy this book! I mean you have to!

From dream to dream.
I really enjoyed the descriptions of the Apollo missions! I learned a few new things, and I'm left wondering, again, why we haven't continued with plans to keep exploring and working in space.

Absolutely amazing story and research
Second time through. Great reading of a wonderfully well done piece of research that brings the incomprehensible effort of the Apollo program to life.
