Leading historian Professor Jeremy Black takes a journey through the vast sweep of European history, examining events as diverse as the rise of the Roman Empire, the brutal Viking raids, the cultural explosion of the Renaissance period, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the rise of consumer culture in the 21st century.

Helps put major events into the larger European perspective
A concise, encompassing, and measured assemblage of the history of the continent from its geological and anthropological beginnings to its current shaping. This compendious book especially helps punctuating the large courses of any given era with the major events that occurred during it. The chapters of this book could serve as chronological summaries to European history readers and students.

A detailed timeline following the beginnings of Europe to the present
A cut and dry overview of European history. The best way to view it is as an index book. Very much timeline driven in a way to provide an account of what happened without providing details. This book is best used for identifying further learning interests. If for instance you are interested in post Rome Europe, this book will provide several areas of interest that covers the basics around the region.
No account of Europe can possibly be this short without leaving out major details. In many ways it is like reading the associated press version of history. I would recommend it with the caveat that you should go in with the mindset that this is not meant to complete your educational experience, but rather be a simple introduction to help guide you like a map.
