About this listen

With vulnerability and honesty, Jerry Sittser walks through his own grief and loss to show that new life is possible - one marked by spiritual depth, joy, compassion, and a deeper appreciation of simple and ordinary gifts. This 25th anniversary edition features a new introduction and two additional chapters, one which provides help for pastors and counselors.

Loss came suddenly for Jerry Sittser. In an instant, a tragic car accident claimed three generations of his family: his mother, his wife, and his young daughter. While most of us will not experience such a catastrophic loss in our lifetime, all of us will face some kind of loss in life. But we can, if we choose, know the grace that transforms us.

Whether your suffering has come in the form of chronic illness, disability, divorce, unemployment, crushing disappointment, or the loss of someone you love, Sittser will help you put your thoughts into words in a way that will guide you deeper into your own healing process.

This revised edition of A Grace Disguised plumbs the depths of our sorrows, asks questions many people are afraid to ask, and provides hope in its answers:

  • Will the pain ever subside?
  • Will my life ever be good again?
  • Will the depression ever lift?
  • Will I ever overcome the bitterness I feel?
  • What is God's plan in all of this?

The circumstances are not important; what we do with those circumstances is. In coming to the end of ourselves, we can come to the beginning of a new life.

Loved listening to this book’

I read this book for the first time 6 years ago and have visited during challenging times of my grief through the years.

Listening this time as I continue to mourn my husband’s transition, has been very good for my soul. I listened as I drove on distances with my work as a Realtor.

I will continue to listen to it and I’m very grateful for this media to continue to enlarge my experience of how I have responded to my mourning. Thank you Audiobook!

I enjoyed listening to this book more than reading it!

Jerry’s lived experience of a catastrophic loss in his book came at just the precise time for me to hear, process and learn from him. This was a balm to my still wounded heart and blessed me with the ministry of better understanding my mourning. I felt released from the requirement to arrive at recovery and then to disregard the need to answer “How ya doing?” with a chin up response of “Great!” because OTHERS wanted my grief to improve. I miss my husband who died tragically in front of me in a traffic accident. It’s been 1 1/2 years. I still expect Kyle to walk in the door. This is not because of denial but if the tragic and unexpected nature. Thanks need to the Lord who promoted the author to comfort others who grieve great loss.

Wow

So thankful for this man giving us a glimpse into his loss, pain and suffering and how he worked through it. This is not a “find healing in 10 east steps” book. Is helpful in my healing process.

Speaks to My Heart

I’ve been widowed twice, the second time recently. Fortunately both of my husband’s deaths were expected due to illness and not sudden catastrophic like the authors’ losses. Still, there are aspects of grieving and loss that are universal even though all are unique. I am benefiting from his sharing and reflections and especially some of the images he uses. In grieving, words and concepts only go so far. Images can be powerful, encouraging, and healing

Thought provoking & inspirational

This book was extremely helpful as my family and I are currently processing one sudden loss and two subsequent losses of aging and sick elderly family. This book has been a wonderful resource that is giving us hope for the future.

Practicality

This book has been incredibly helpful after the unexpected loss of my 29-year-old son. The author's way of explaining his grief and the imagery he used helped me make sense of my own emotions. While other books on the subject did not resonate with me, this one did, particularly in distinguishing between grief and mourning. This distinction allowed me to further explore these concepts in my own language, which was very beneficial. I appreciate the expanded version, the lessons, and the questions at the end. They provided practical guidance that went beyond merely understanding grief and mourning. Thank you very much for this.
